Sri Lankans give election verdict on Rajapaksa comeback bid

The nationalist strongman has set his sights on becoming premier of a government led by his Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). Seeking to head off pressure to name Rajapaksa premier should he win an overwhelming mandate, Sirisena fired two dozen members of the SLFP's executive committee who had been loyal to his predecessor.




London council becomes first in Britain to ban "hippy crack" laughing gas

The popularity of laughing gas is growing, according to a government survey, in which 7.6 percent of 16- to 24-year-olds said they had taken it between 2013 and 2014, behind only cannabis.


Boyfriend of Morgan Freeman's granddaughter charged with her murder

E'Dena Hines, 33, was found fatally stabbed early on Sunday in a street near her apartment in the city's Washington Heights neighborhood, according to the New York Police Department. Lamar Davenport, 30, was taken into custody and transferred to a hospital for mental evaluation, police said.


Tsipras likely to call confidence vote after party revolt

Energy Minister Panos Skourletis described such a parliamentary vote as "self-evident" following Friday's rebellion when almost a third of Syriza deputies abstained or voted against the agreement. With Syriza's left wing showing little sign of returning to the party fold, Skourletis also raised the possibility of early elections should Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras lose a confidence motion.

The death toll from the two blasts last on Wednesday rose to 114, officials said. More than 700 people were injured and 70 are missing, most of them fire fighters, the official Xinhua news agency said.

German newspaper Welt am Sonntag said on Sunday that the document, entitled "Platini - skeleton in the closet", was distributed out of FIFA's headquarters. The newspaper said it paints an unflattering picture of the former France international and questions his suitability for the role of FIFA president.

Punjab Home Minister Shuja Khanzada was among at least 16 people killed at his political office near his hometown of Attock, about 80 km (50 miles) west of the capital, Islamabad. Khanzada had told Reuters that police had cautioned him to increase security and restrict his movements following the killing of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi chief Malik Ishaq in a shootout with police on July 29.




Palestinian shot dead after stabbing Israeli trooper

A Palestinian man was shot dead on Monday by Israeli police troopers after he stabbed and lightly wounded one of them at a military checkpoint in the occupied West Bank, a police spokeswoman said. The incident came two days after a Palestinian was shot and killed and another was wounded during what Israeli authorities said were two knife attacks on troops in the West Bank. With U.S.-sponsored peace negotiations stalled since April 2014, violence has simmered in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, among territories where Palestinians seek statehood.


Myanmar's Suu Kyi meets ousted leader ahead of showdown in parliament

The president removed Shwe Mann and his allies from the leadership of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) last week in a dramatic shake-up of the country's political establishment three months before the first free general election in 25 years. Suu Kyi, who leads the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) that is expected to win the vote in November, and Shwe Mann met for an hour, a ruling party parliamentarian said on condition of anonymity.
