| Series of bombs in China kills at least three - CCTV | | | A series of package bombs exploded on Wednesday in China's southwestern city of Liuzhou, killing at least three people, state television said, publishing images of a collapsed building, a plume of smoke and streets strewn with rubble. Police did not say who they considered responsible for the attacks in Guangxi province that injured at least 13 people, said China Central Television (CCTV), which posted photographs of the devastation on its microblog. Thirteen places received the package bombs, from hospitals and shopping malls to prisons, transport stations and town government offices, state radio said in an online report. |
| Iran's leader condemns Saudi Arabia over haj crush, demands bodies of Iranian pilgrims | |  Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei on Wednesday accused Saudi Arabia of hampering the transfer of bodies of Iranian pilgrims killed in a crush at haj last week, adding fuel to a growing spat over the disaster in which nearly 800 people died. Iran has been the most vocal in its criticism of Saudi Arabia for the disaster last Thursday, in which at least 239 Iranians were killed. Tehran says 200 of its pilgrims are still missing.

The move, which sets the stage for Russia's biggest play in the region since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, was announced as Syrian government warplanes conducted heavy strikes in Homs province and the United States and its allies struck Islamic State targets. Russia, which has been steadily dispatching more and more military aircraft to a base in Latakia, declined to say when it would launch its own strikes, but made it clear it too would be targeting Islamic State militants.

A federal judge has ordered the State Department to release all of Clinton's work emails in monthly batches through to January 2016 after a Vice News reporter sued the department under freedom of information laws. The specially convened court convicted 12 of 13 accused earlier this month for their role in the events that led to seven bombs exploding on packed trains during the evening rush hour in Mumbai on July 11, 2006. Police say the attack was carried out by disaffected Muslims at the behest of Pakistan-based Islamist militants, and named militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba's Pakistan-based leader, Azeem Cheema, as the prime conspirator.

| China says arrests two Japanese for spying | | | BEIJING/TOKYO (Reuters) - China has arrested two Japanese for spying, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday, and Japan said the two had been held since May and diplomats were doing all they could to help. Japan's Asahi newspaper said one man was taken into custody in China's northeast province of Liaoning near the border with North Korea and the other in the eastern province of Zhejiang near a military facility. The newspaper added China appeared to be looking into whether the men were acting under instructions from the Japanese government. |
| France investigates Syria's Assad for crimes against humanity | |  France is investigating Bashar al-Assad over alleged crimes against humanity, the Paris prosecutor's office said on Wednesday, launching a case that highlights divisions among major powers over relations with the Syrian leader. The investigation, which is also examining claims of torture and kidnapping by Assad's forces, was opened "on the basis of indications received from the foreign ministry" on Sept. 10, an official at the prosecutor's office said. An estimated 250,000 people have been killed in Syria's four-year civil war between Assad's troops, rebel groups and Islamic State militants, and a further 11 million displaced.
