| By Javed Hussain PARACHINAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - Ten people were killed and at least 50 injured in a blast in the northwestern Pakistani city of Parachinar on Sunday, officials said, but it was unclear which militant group was responsible. Parachinar has a large Shi'ite population, unusual in Sunni-majority Pakistan, and locals have expressed fears that militias who splintered from the Taliban and sworn allegiance to Islamic State might target them. Pakistan also has its own sectarian militant groups, most notably Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ). |

| Russia's Emergencies Ministry said it had taken more than 270 people and 50 vehicles to deal with the blaze and police investigators said the bodies of 23 people had been recovered after the fire had been put out. The police said they had begun an investigation into possible negligence and experts from Moscow would be brought in to help out. "Investigators will look into every possible version of how the fire started and led to such tragic consequences," Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement, saying it considered the incident a crime. |

 A Kuwaiti appeals court upheld one death sentence and overturned another in the case of an Islamist suicide bombing at a mosque in June, Kuwaiti newspaper al-Qabas reported on Sunday. A criminal court in September had sentenced seven defendants to death in the case. Fourteen other defendants were acquitted at the time.

| A senior ethnic Uighur security official was killed in a police raid on a "nest of terrorists", Chinese state media reported, giving details on a previously unannounced operation in the violence-prone far western region of Xinjiang. The official People's Daily, in a report late on Saturday, named the dead official as Maimaitijiang Tuohuniyazi, a deputy head of public security in Aksu, a vast part of western Xinjiang that borders Kyrgyzstan. It said domestic security chief Meng Jianzhu, who is currently in Xinjiang's capital Urumqi, offered condolences to Tuohuniyazi's widow, praising him as a brave and selfless man. |
