| Thailand's PM defends British murders verdict against protests | |  By Amy Sawitta Lefevre and Panarat Thepgumpanat BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's prime minister lashed out on Monday at protesters who took to the streets of Myanmar's Yangon on the weekend after a Thai court sentenced two Myanmar migrant workers to death for murdering two British tourists. Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said critics should respect the verdict and that Thailand's justice system would not bow to public pressure. Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Htun, both 22, were found guilty by a Thai court on Thursday of killing Hannah Witheridge, 23, and David Miller, 24, whose battered bodies were found on a beach on the southern Thai holiday island of Koh Tao in 2014.

| China passes controversial counter-terrorism law | |  By Ben Blanchard BEIJING (Reuters) - China passed a controversial new anti-terrorism law on Sunday that requires technology firms to help decrypt information, but not install security "backdoors" as initially planned, and allows the military to venture overseas on counter-terror operations. Chinese officials say their country faces a growing threat from militants and separatists, especially in its unruly Western region of Xinjiang, where hundreds have died in violence in the past few years. U.S. President Barack Obama has said that he had raised concerns about the law directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

| Former Salvadoran national soccer player Alfredo Pacheco shot dead | |  Alfredo Pacheco, a soccer player who played for the Salvadoran national side before being banned from the sport for life for his involvement in match fixing, was murdered on Sunday, the Salvadoran attorney general's office said. Pacheco, 33, was with a group of friends chatting in a petrol station when an unknown assailant shot at the group various times, authorities said. "The attorney general's office in Santa Ana processed the crime scene of the murder of Alfredo Pacheco at 3.30 am in a petrol station," it said.
