Naughty or nice, SantaCon revelers descend on New York |
By Alexander Besant NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hundreds of merrymakers dressed like Santa Claus and his elves assembled in a Brooklyn park on Saturday morning to begin the annual pub crawl known as SantaCon, a Yuletide rite with a reputation for inspiring bad behavior among the revelers. Organizers expect thousands of others eventually to join the day-long party, with more than 14,000 people signing up to participate on the SantaCon NYC Facebook page. Terance McNamara, 25, of Hoboken, New Jersey, was one of the early birds who gathered in the New York borough's hip Williamsburg neighborhood dressed in a bright red Santa suit to start a day of bar-hopping.

Death toll from day of clashes in Burundi capital rises to nearly 90 |
Nearly 90 people were killed during Friday's clashes in the Burundian capital, the army said on Saturday, the worst outbreak of violence in Burundi since a failed coup in May. Blasts and gunfire echoed around Bujumbura for most of Friday and residents said officials spent the day collecting bullet-riddled bodies from city streets. Army spokesman Gaspard Baratuza said gunmen had attacked three military sites in Bujumbura, kindling a day of clashes across the city. Unrest in Burundi, which started in April when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced plans for a third term in office, has unnerved a region still volatile two decades after the genocide in neighbouring Rwanda.

Burkina Faso charges three soldiers with murder of journalist |
Authorities in Burkina Faso have charged three soldiers over the murder in 1998 of journalist Norbert Zongo whose killing became a symbol of repression during veteran President Blaise Compaore's rule. The charges come a week after a general was charged over the murder in 1987 of President Thomas Sankara and provide further evidence of the transitional government's determination to pursue high-profile cases associated with the Compaore era. Burkina Faso's democratic transition is seen as an example for other African states.
