Bangladesh police raid militant hideout, explosives found

Police said on Sunday they had detained three suspected members of a banned militant group and found a sniper rifle, ammunition, explosives and military suits in a hideout in southeastern Bangladesh. The raid came days after police busted a militant hideout in the capital Dhaka as security forces stepped up a hunt for Islamist militants behind a spate of recent attacks in the Muslim-majority nation. Police searched an apartment in the port city of Chittagong based on information from the three members of the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen organisation who were caught in an earlier raid, Chittagong city police commissioner Mohammad Abdul Jalil Mondal said.

"Officers were confronted by a combative subject resulting in the discharging of the officer's weapon which fatally wounded two individuals," the police department said in a statement. The police department of the nation's third-largest city is under a federal civil rights investigation for its use of deadly force and officer discipline.


China province to probe all waste sites after landslide disaster

A damaged cement mixer truck is seen in the   industrial park hit by a landslide in ShenzhenChina's southern province of Guangdong, one of the country's biggest industrial bases, will check all construction waste sites in the wake of a deadly landslide to ensure none are in dangerous locations or poorly managed, state media said on Sunday. The Dec. 20 landslide in the Guangdong boom town of Shenzhen buried more than 30 buildings in an industrial park and has left around 70 people missing, with only a handful of bodies found so far. The Guangdong government said there were many problems with the management of building waste sites, including safety issues, state news agency Xinhua reported.

Former FIFA official Figueredo arrives to court in   Montevideo after being extradited from Switzerland to UruguayFormer head of South America's CONMEBOL soccer body Eugenio Figueredo has admitted he received bribes from television firms in exchange for maintaining media rights, a lawyer involved in the case in Uruguay said on Saturday. CONMEBOL, an influential grouping that includes traditional soccer powers such as Brazil and Argentina, is heavily embroiled in a worldwide soccer corruption probe led by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. Figueredo arrived back to his native Uruguay on Thursday after being extradited on corruption charges from Switzerland, where he was arrested in May. On Friday, the 83-year-old former vice-president of world soccer federation FIFA was moved to hospital from prison due to chest pain.
