5:27:02 AM

Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak speaks at the opening of the International Conference on Deradicalisation and Countering Violent Extremism in Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaBy Rozanna Latiff and Emily Chow KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia's attorney-general cleared Prime Minister Najib Razak of any criminal offence or corruption on Tuesday, and said a controversial transfer of $681 million into his personal bank account was a gift from Saudi Arabia's royal family. The leader of the main opposition party denounced the findings, which came after months of pressure on Najib to resign over the scandal, saying the appointment of the attorney-general by the prime minister himself suggested a conflict of interest. The involvement of the Saudi royal family is an unexpected twist in the saga over the mysterious funds transfer and the troubles of indebted state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), whose advisory board Najib chairs.

Anti-abortion activists indicted in Texas for Planned Parenthood video
12:52:39 AM
By Jon Herskovitz AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Two anti-abortion activists behind the filming of videos on fetal tissue procurement by Planned Parenthood were indicted by a Texas grand jury on Monday, while clearing the women's health group of any wrong-doing. The videos released last summer led Texas and other Republican-controlled states to try to halt funding for local Planned Parenthood operations, with Republicans in the U.S. Congress also pushing for a funding cut. The grand jury reviewed the case for more than two months and its decision was a result of a probe launched last year under Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, who accused Planned Parenthood of the "gruesome harvesting of baby body parts." "After a lengthy and thorough investigation by the Harris County District Attorney's Office, the Texas Rangers, and the Houston Police Department, a Harris County grand jury took no action Monday against Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast," the Harris County District Attorney's office said in a statement.

U.S. judge asked to remove lead lawyers for GM switch plaintiffs

The GM logo is seen at the General Motors Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Lansing,By Jessica Dye NEW YORK (Reuters) - A U.S. judge was asked on Monday to remove three lawyers from their leadership roles in litigation against General Motors Co over a faulty ignition switch linked to nearly 400 injuries and deaths, after the stunning collapse last week of the first federal test trial over the part. The motion from Lance Cooper, who represents other ignition-switch plaintiffs, said the "poor decisions and mismanagement" of lawyers Robert Hilliard, Steve Berman and Elizabeth Cabraser was hindering resolution of hundreds of lawsuits against the automaker, which recalled 2.6 million vehicles with the defective part in 2014. A series of test trials, known as bellwether trials in legal circles, are often used in large scale litigation to help both sides gauge the collective value of plaintiffs' claims.

U.N., El Salvador launch U.S.-backed anti-corruption programme
12:42:37 AM
By Nelson Renteria SAN SALVADOR (Reuters) - The U.N. on Monday announced a U.S.-financed pilot programme to help fight corruption in El Salvador, a Central American country so torn by drugs and gang warfare that it ranks among the most violent in the world. The three-year programme, with an unknown price tag, will support the government of leftist President Salvador Sanchez Ceren but lacks the broad investigative powers of the U.N.-backed International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG). The CICIG was instrumental in gathering evidence that Guatemalan President Otto Perez was part of a customs racket, leading to his resignation and eventual arrest last year.
