Niger holds tense vote, with Issoufou running for second term

Security forces patrolled cities and villages in case of unrest or militant attacks. Unidentified armed men attacked two electoral commission vehicles in a rural area about 100 km (60 miles) northwest of the capital, according to security sources, but there were few other reports of trouble.

The Nokia headquarters is seen in EspooBy Eric Auchard BARCELONA (Reuters) - Mobile equipment maker Nokia sees the shift to the next generation of 5G wireless networks kicking off well ahead of 2020, the year when many in the industry consider mass-market upgrades will begin, its chief executive said on Sunday. Chief Executive Rajeev Suri said the company plans to pick up investment in 5G technology in 2016 and that sales of 5G-ready equipment capable of future upgrades could begin as early as 2017. This may surprise some of you," Suri declared to an audience including investors ahead of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week.

Stephen Larson, a former federal judge who is now in private practice, told Reuters that the victims he represents have an interest in the information which goes beyond the Justice Department's criminal investigation. Larson said he was contacted a week ago by the Justice Department and local prosecutors about representing the victims, prior to the dispute becoming public.




Attorneys for Bill Cosby's wife seek stay of deposition

Actor and comedian Bill Cosby departs a hearing on   sexual assault charges at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown,   PennsylvaniaAttorneys for the wife of comedian Bill Cosby have filed an emergency motion to stay her upcoming deposition in a defamation case brought by seven women against the entertainer, court records showed. Camille Cosby's lawyers late on Saturday filed the motion in a federal court in Massachusetts to delay her deposition pending an appeal of a Friday ruling not to halt the proceeding. "The Cosbys' last-minute filing is the latest in a series of increasingly brazen attempts to interfere with the deposition of Mrs. Cosby," the filing said.




Criticism of crackdown mounts in Egypt as policeman sent to trial

Egypt's prosecutor sent a police officer to trial for murder, state news agency MENA said on Sunday, after he confessed to shooting dead a driver, in the latest incident of alleged police brutality that has stirred public anger. Slow handling of a string of alleged abuses by police and a move to convict an author over his sexually-explicit writings has prompted rare criticism of Egypt's authorities by prominent journalists and broadcasters. Sergeant Mustafa Abdel Karim, who was said to have confessed to shooting the driver after an argument about a fare, was forced to flee an angry mob of locals on Thursday night after the incident.


Feyenoord supporters detained as they protest against club management - media reports

Several hundred supporters of Rotterdam football club Feyenoord, angry at the club's management, were being rounded up and detained by police on Sunday, Dutch media reported. Around a thousand supporters had been demonstrating against management, and "several hundred" were detained, the national broadcaster NOS reported. Feyenoord is in seventh place in the Dutch league, with a seven-game losing streak.

Forty-three years after Britain joined the EU's predecessor, Cameron announced a June 23 referendum on Saturday after clinching a deal from 27 other leaders to give Britain what he said was a special status.




Six killed in Michigan shootings; suspect was an Uber driver

A television station reported the suspect was an Uber driver who took fares between shootings. The 45-year-old suspect, Jason Dalton, was believed to have opened fire late on Saturday outside an apartment complex, a Kia car dealership and a Cracker Barrel restaurant over a period of little more than four hours, Kalamazoo County prosecutor Jeff Getting said.




Hindu priest killed in Bangladesh

Police said the attack was perpetrated by a local militant group, while Islamic State claimed responsibility in a statement issued via social media. Bangladesh has experienced a wave of militant violence in recent months, including a series of bomb attacks on mosques and Hindu temples.

The militants had attacked a bus carrying police reservists near Srinagar, Kashmir's summer capital, before breaking into a training institute. "We have killed one militant," Bhavish Choudhary, a spokesman for the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), said on Sunday evening.




Three Turkish journalists freed after kidnapping by Kurdish militants - agency

By Seyhmus Cakan DIYARBAKIR, Turkey (Reuters) - Three journalists from Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency were freed on Sunday after being kidnapped by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in the mainly Kurdish southeast, the news agency said. The journalists were abducted and held for more than 48 hours, Anadolu said on its website. Security sources in the southeast told Reuters the three were believed to have been kidnapped after filming in a PKK stronghold without permission from the militant group.
