| UN welcomes Obama Guantanamo plan, but calls for due process | |  The top U.N. human rights official welcomed President Barack Obama's plan announced on Tuesday to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, but stressed that no detainee should remain in indefinite custody without charge or trial. Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, said the U.S. facility in Cuba had been a "serious blot on the human rights record, and reputation, of the United States for the past 14 years". "All Guantanamo detainees should either be transferred to regular detention centres in the U.S. mainland or other countries where fair trials before civilian courts and due process guarantees can be provided in accordance with international norms and standards," he said in a statement.

(Reuters) - The Michigan Uber driver charged with murdering six people changed vehicles after sideswiping a car at the start of the shooting spree, authorities said on Tuesday, adding that they hoped his phone would help establish a motive for the killings. Jason Dalton, 45, was denied bail on Monday after a court in which a detective testified that Dalton admitted to the five-hour shooting rampage over the weekend in Kalamazoo, about 150 miles (240 km) west of Detroit. Searching for a motive for the violence, investigators are now focusing on a gun and a cell phone seized from Dalton and reports that he drove fares for the Uber car-hailing service in between the shooting episodes, said Paul Matyas of the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department.

| Swedish doctor gets 10 years in prison in bunker kidnap case | |  A Swedish doctor was sentenced to 10 years in jail for kidnapping a woman and keeping her in a specially constructed sound-proof bunker. Martin Peter Trenneborg, who held the woman for six days, had admitted to kidnapping her but denied and was acquitted of a rape charge. Stockholm's District Court said in the verdict the doctor had meticulously planned the deed for a long time.

| Man arrested over West Brom coin-throwing incident | | | Police have arrested a man in relation to a coin-throwing incident after the FA Cup fifth-round tie between Reading and West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. Albion midfielder Chris Brunt was struck by a coin when he went to hand his shirt to a young supporter after his team's 3-1 defeat by the Championship (second tier) club. The object was thrown from the area housing West Brom fans and Brunt suffered a cut just below his left eye. |
