China knows it cannot sustain export-driven growth model - Obama
7:16:53 PM

A trailer loaded with container boxes travels in Ningbo portBy Roberta Rampton WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday said China recognised it could not sustain an export-driven growth model indefinitely but that it would take time to change. Speaking to state governors at the White House, Obama urged them to press the U.S. Congress to approve the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact to boost U.S. exports in a region where China is "the 800-pound gorilla." Obama said it was tempting for China to try to solve its short-term problems by dumping state-subsidized goods into the U.S. market but said his administration had made clear to China that would not work, Obama said. "They recognise that they can't forever sustain an export-driven growth model, but it's going to take some time and it's tempting for them to solve short-term problems by just dumping a bunch of state-subsidized goods into the U.S. market," Obama said in response to a question raising concerns about China's exports of iron ore.

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron leaves 10 Downing Street to travel to the Houses of Parliament in central LondonBy Kylie MacLellan and Elizabeth Piper LONDON (Reuters) - The pound posted its biggest one-day loss in almost six years on Monday on concerns of a possible British exit from the EU, adding to the pressure on Prime Minister David Cameron as he mounted a defence of his deal to keep the country in the bloc. The fall in the currency, as well as in government bond prices, was triggered by London Mayor Boris Johnson - a senior figure in Cameron's Conservative Party - throwing his support behind the exit campaign. Johnson, one of the country's most popular politicians, gave the "Brexit" camp a much-needed figurehead when he announced his support on Sunday, just days after Cameron struck his deal in Brussels to hand Britain what he called a "special status".
