Turkish Deputy PM says restructuring of intelligence units "on the agenda"

Turkey is considering the restructuring of its intelligence services, Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said on Monday after the government announced sweeping changes to the structure of the military over the weekend following a failed coup. "The restructuring of intelligence units is on the agenda, just like it was for the armed forces," Kurtulmus told a news conference after a cabinet meeting. President Tayyip Erdogan wants to bring the national intelligence agency (MIT) and the military General Staff directly under the control of the presidency, Turkish officials have said, though this would require a constitutional amendment for which he would need the support of opposition parties.

Turkey aims to prevent its armed forces from again being used to stage a coup, Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said on Monday, after the government announced sweeping changes to the structure of the military over the weekend. Kurtulmus, speaking at a news conference following a cabinet meeting, also criticised Germany's decision to prevent Erdogan addressing an anti-coup rally in the city of Cologne by video link on Sunday, saying it smacked of "double standards".


Dutch police detain man who yelled "Bomb!" on bus but find no threat

Dutch police, on alert for a security threat to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, on Monday detained a confused man who yelled "Bomb!" on a bus, but found no evidence of a serious threat, a spokeswoman said. Police have been conducting vehicle searches near the airport, one of Europe's largest, since last week after receiving intelligence about a possible threat.

Government seeks parliament's approval for $15.4 billion extra spending

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull ordered the probe last week, after prison CCTV footage showed guards teargassing six aboriginal teenage inmates and strapping a half-naked, hooded boy to a chair at a Darwin youth prison in the Northern Territory. The footage sparked renewed criticism of Australia's treatment of Aborigines and their high imprisonment rate.

The 11 soldiers were part of a group which launched an attack on a hotel where Erdogan was holidaying on the night of July 15 in the southwestern resort of Marmaris. Anadolu said the fugitives were caught in the Ula district of Mugla province after gendarmerie special forces, supported by helicopters and drones, were sent to the area after a tip-off from a local.
