Macchiarini was fired in March when Karolinska said he had supplied false information on his resume and was guilty of scientific negligence after two of his patients died.

5:38:57 PM
By Pietro Lombardi LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - A fictional domestic abuse trial in the popular British radio soap opera "The Archers" has prompted charities to call for more support for real-life victims of domestic abuse. The plight of character Helen Titchener, standing trial for stabbing her abusive husband Rob, has sparked a fundraising campaign, a social media hashtag and a debate on prison reform. "If Helen had access to specialist domestic abuse support in Ambridge (the fictional village where the character lives) perhaps she would not be on trial now," Polly Neate, chief executive of Women's Aid England said in a statement.

File photo of Bahraini human rights activist Nabeel Rajab arriving for his appeal hearing at court in ManamaBahrain prosecutors on Monday filed new charges against a man believed by rights activists to be the Gulf state's most prominent jailed democracy campaigner, Nabeel Rajab, after the New York Times published an op-ed under his byline. The prosecutor of the Gulf state's northern region, Mohammed Salah, said a man had been questioned over a complaint from the cybercrime unit accusing him of "publishing a column in a foreign newspaper in which he deliberately broadcast news, statements and false rumours that undermine the kingdom's prestige and stature". Salah did not identify the man or name the newspaper, but a rights group and a lawyer said the statement clearly referred to Rajab, who had been in jail since June on charges related to anti-government tweets published last year, including one accusing the security forces of torturing detainees.

"We will support multilateral trade mechanisms and oppose protectionism to reverse declines in global trade." Discussions at the meeting were distracted by North Korea test-firing three medium-range ballistic missiles in a defiant reminder of the risks to global security.
