European parliament passes watered-down draft law on air pollution

Smog surrounds The Shard and St Paul's Cathedral   in LondonThe European Parliament passed a new draft law on air pollution on Wednesday that the European Commission and several members of parliament (MEPs) said was not enough to cut emissions to World Health Organization standards. The law, which has taken almost three years to get through parliament, aims to halve the number of premature deaths caused by air pollution from more than 400,000, and targets the many EU states already in breach of existing air pollution limits. A European Environment Agency (EEA) report published on Wednesday showed that member states across the bloc far exceed annual limits for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions and at least 10 states breached limits on other pollutants in 2014.

Thomas Mair, 53, shot Cox three times and repeatedly stabbed the 41-year-old mother of two young children in her northern English electoral district. During the attack on June 16, he shouted "Britain first" and "Keep Britain independent" his trial heard, and when arrested he told officers he was a political activist.




Kazakhstan's parliament wants to rename capital after president

The unanimous vote in favour of renaming Astana adds to the growing personality cult around Nazarbayev who has run the Central Asian country since 1989. Last week, Kazakhstan's central bank said the portrait of the former steelworker and Communist apparatchik would appear on a bank note for the first time, which enters circulation on Dec. 1, the officially celebrated Day of the First President.




EU lawmaker calls for investigation after Reuters report on jet fuel to Syria

European Union foreign policy chief Mogherini   addresses the European Parliement in StrasbourgSTRASBOURG/LONDON (Reuters) - A European Union lawmaker has asked the bloc's foreign policy chief to launch an investigation after Reuters reported that Russian tankers had carried jet fuel to Syria through EU waters. The shipments to Syria bolstered military supplies to a war-torn country where Moscow is carrying out air strikes in support of the government, Reuters reported, citing sources with knowledge of the matter. EU Council Regulation 1323/2014, introduced two years ago, bans any supply of jet fuel to Syria from the EU territories, whether or not the fuel originated in the European Union.

Judge Jose Perals also called for a five-year sentence for former Barca president Sandro Rosell and a fine of 8.4 million euros ($8.9 million) for the club, but called for charges against current president Josep Maria Bartomeu to be dropped.




U.S., Russia request Czechs extradite arrested Russian hacker

The United States and Russia have both requested the extradition of a Russian arrested in Prague and indicted in the U.S. for hacking computers of social media companies, the Czech justice ministry said on Wednesday. The ministry will review the requests for the extradition of Yevgeniy Nikulin, who a U.S. federal grand jury said had hacked into the U.S.-based social media companies LinkedIn, Dropbox and Formspring. The requests will then be referred to a Prague court, a spokeswoman said.

Some Rohingya refugees have been missing since Tuesday after a group crossed the river Naaf that separates Myanmar and Bangladesh. "There was a group of people from our village who crossed the river by boat to come here, but suddenly the boat sank," said Humayun Kabir, the father of three children untraceable since the mishap.

Dela Rosa, a stocky, celebrity-like general nicknamed "Bato" (Rock), was responding to hours of testimony from Kerwin Espinosa, a confessed drugs dealer and son of a mayor who was shot dead last month by police while in prison on remand for narcotics links.

The U.S. House of Representatives re-authorised last week the Iran Sanctions Act, or ISA, for 10 years. The law was first adopted in 1996 to punish investments in Iran's energy industry and deter Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons.




South Korea Park's office bought Viagra "for altitude sickness"

News of the purchase, confirmed by Park's spokesman, Jung Youn-kuk, comes as Park is fighting calls for her to step down over allegations that she and a friend had improperly pressured big businesses to contribute funds to foundations set up to support her policy. Viagra became the most searched keyword among South Koreans on the country's main online news portals following the news, which was initially reported by an opposition Democratic Party member of parliament.
