U.N.-backed tribunal in Cambodia upholds life in jail for Khmer Rouge leaders

It was the tribunal's second conviction against those responsible for the deaths of as many as 2.2 million Cambodians, in what was one of the bloodiest chapters of the twentieth century. The Supreme Court Chamber said Khmer Rouge "Brother Number Two" Nuon Chea, 90, and former President Khieu Samphan, 85, were guilty of crimes against humanity, murder, persecution on political grounds and other inhumane acts over the forced evacuation of Phnom Penh after the fall of the city in 1975.




Thai prosecutors charge influential Buddhist monk over money laundering

Police in the predominantly Buddhist country have tried several times to arrest Phra Dhammachayo, abbot of Wat Phra Dhammakaya, a futuristic-looking monastery located some 50 km (30 miles) north of Bangkok. "Prosecutors have agreed to charge Phra Dhammachayao of Dhammakaya temple on charges of conspiracy to launder money, money laundering and receiving stolen goods," Somnuek Siangkong, spokesman of the Office of the Attorney General, told Reuters.




Samsung Group, pension fund offices raided in growing S.Korea scandal

Prosecutors also raided South Korea's largest pension fund, the National Pension Service (NPS), an NPS spokeswoman said. The Yonhap news agency reported that investigators were probing NPS's decision to approve the $8 billion merger of Samsung C&T Corp and Cheil Industries last year.




Dubai drops case against UK woman charged over her own rape - advocates

Britain-based legal advocacy group Detained in Dubai said that prosecutors had dropped charges against the 25-year-old woman for having extramarital sex that could have led to her imprisonment and flogging. The woman's family said that their daughter was on holiday with plans to travel to Australia when she was reportedly raped by two British men in Dubai and later arrested for reporting her rape.


Brad Pitt cleared by FBI for airplane incident, will not face charges

Pitt, 52, earlier this month was cleared by the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services for the incident on Sept 14. "In response to allegations made following a flight within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States which landed in Los Angeles carrying Mr. Brad Pitt and his children, the FBI has conducted a review of the circumstances and will not pursue further investigation," said Laura Eimiller, a spokeswoman for the FBI's Los Angeles field office.

South Korean opposition political parties said this week they will review strategies to impeach Park after prosecutors said she was an accomplice in the corruption scandal. Park's close friend and a former presidential aide were indicted on Sunday for abuse of power for pressuring big businesses to contribute funds to foundations at the centre of the scandal.




Judge orders U.S. to reconsider denying passport to 'intersex' veteran

By Keith Coffman DENVER (Reuters) - A federal judge in Denver ordered the U.S. Department of State to reconsider its denial of a passport to a Navy veteran from Colorado who identifies as neither male or female, court documents showed on Tuesday. The ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed by Dana Zzyym, who was born with ambiguous sex characteristics, and had been attempting to travel to Mexico City for a meeting of intersex people - those born with reproductive or sexual anatomy that does not fit the typical definitions of male or female. Zzyym welcomed the ruling but said it was the first step in a long battle for rights of intersex people.


Trump keeping 'open mind' on pulling out of climate accord

Trump told the New York Times in an interview that he thinks there is "some connectivity" between human activity and global warming, despite previously describing climate change as a hoax. A source on Trump's transition team told Reuters earlier this month that the New York businessman was seeking quick ways to withdraw the United States from the 2015 Paris Agreement to combat climate change.

An NPS spokeswoman confirmed prosecutors were searching the fund's offices, but declined to give details. Local media reports said earlier that prosecutors were probing any irregularities involving the fund's backing of Cheil Industries Inc's bid to acquire Samsung C&T Corp last year. Yonhap News Agency reported that prosecutors also raided the office of Samsung Group senior executive Choi Gee-sung. ...

Colombia, FARC rebels to sign new peace deal on Thursday

The revised document will be signed in Bogota between FARC leader Rodrigo Londono and Santos, who won the Nobel Peace Prize last month for his efforts to end the conflict with the insurgent group. The government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) have been in talks in Havana, Cuba for the last four years, hammering out a deal to end a conflict that has killed more than 220,000 and displaced millions in the Andean country.




U.S.-Iranian citizen convicted in U.S. for trying to buy missiles for Iran

By Nate Raymond NEW YORK (Reuters) - A dual citizen of Iran and the United States was found guilty on Tuesday on charges that he tried to help acquire surface-to-air missiles and aircraft components for the government of Iran in violation of U.S. sanctions. Reza Olangian, 56, was convicted by a federal jury in Manhattan on all four counts he faced, including conspiring to acquire and transfer anti-aircraft missiles, prosecutors said. Lee Ginsberg, Olangian's lawyer, said the verdict "was very disappointing and we do plan to appeal." Olangian, who became a U.S. citizen in 1999, was arrested in Estonia in October 2012 and subsequently extradited to the United States following a sting operation orchestrated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.


Macau billionaire faces new U.S. charges in U.N. bribe case

A revised indictment filed in Manhattan federal court against Ng Lap Seng, a real estate developer from the Chinese territory, and his assistant, Jeff Yin, included new charges that both men violated the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The indictment said he took steps to evade paying income taxes and helped a diplomat from the Dominican Republic involved in the scheme conceal portions of his income from U.S. tax authorities.
