Mississippi church burned, vandalized with 'Vote Trump'

(Reuters) - A historic black church in Mississippi was burned and spray-painted with "Vote Trump" and authorities said on Wednesday it was arson and being probed as a hate crime committed one week before the U.S. presidential election. Greenville Fire Chief Ruben Brown Sr. told a news conference on Wednesday afternoon that investigators had determined the fire at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church was "intentionally set." "Samples and evidence have been collected from inside the church and are being analyzed to determine the accelerant or ignition source," Brown said. "We're investigating this as a hate crime," Greenville Police Chief Delando Wilson told a news conference early on Wednesday.




Jury selection begins in Venezuelan first lady's nephews' U.S. trial

By Nate Raymond NEW YORK (Reuters) - Jury selection got underway in New York on Wednesday in the trial of two nephews of Venezuela's first lady who are facing U.S. charges that they attempted a multimillion-dollar drug deal for a large amount of cash to help their family stay in power. Franqui Francisco Flores de Freitas and Efrain Antonio Campo Flores, nephews of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's wife, Cilia Flores, appeared in Manhattan federal court wearing grey and blue sweaters, respectively, as jury selection began.


England and Scotland to defy FIFA poppy ban

"The poppy is an important symbol of remembrance and we do not believe it represents a political, religious or commercial message, nor does it relate to any one historical event," the English FA tweeted.




Philippines' Duterte rails at U.S. 'monkeys' for halting gun sale

Duterte's tirades against the former colonial power are routine during his speeches and he said on Wednesday he once believed in Washington, but had since lost respect for the Philippines' biggest ally. In Washington, U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby said he regarded Duterte's latest salvo as "inexplicably at odds with the close relationship that we continue to have with not just the Filipino people, but the Filipino government." The State Department halted the sale of the assault rifles to the Philippine police after staff from U.S. Senator Ben Cardin's office said he would oppose it, Senate aides told Reuters on Monday.

Two Iowa police officers slain in ambushes, suspect apprehended

The suspect, 46-year-old Scott Michael Greene, was being held in connection with the killings that occurred shortly after 1 a.m. in the Iowa capital Des Moines and its affluent suburb Urbandale, police said. The slain officers were identified as Sergeant Anthony Beminio, 38, of the Des Moines Police Department and Officer Justin Martin, 24, of the Urbandale Police Department.

The argument was made during a two-day hearing to determine the scope of evidence prosecutors can introduce at Cosby's trial next June, including whether they can call as witnesses more than a dozen other women who have accused him of sexual assault. Cosby, 79, who once enjoyed immense popularity as a family-friendly entertainer, is facing assault allegations going back decades from about 60 women.




Far rightists threaten asylum seekers in eastern German town

Suspected far-right extremists have threatened asylum seekers in the eastern German town of Bautzen, police said on Wednesday, adding to signs of discontent over an influx of almost one million last year. Police cited witnesses as saying that about eight men had threatened a group of two German women and three young asylum seekers in the town on Tuesday evening. Two of the men aimed objects resembling pistols at the asylum seekers, police said.


U.S. justices drill down on Venezuela oil rig dispute

By Lawrence Hurley WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Some U.S. Supreme Court justices on Wednesday appeared wary about the foreign policy implications of making it too easy for foreign governments to be sued in U.S. courts as they considered a lawsuit by an Oklahoma-based oil drilling company that claims Venezuela unlawfully seized 11 drilling rigs six years ago. The eight justices heard an hour-long argument in Venezuela's appeal of a lower court ruling that allowed one of the claims brought by Helmerich & Payne International Drilling Company against the South American nation to proceed. The company sued both the Venezuelan government and state-owned oil companies under a U.S. law called the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, claiming among other things that the property seizure violated international law.


Watford chairman Riva resigns

Argentina looks to tame Peronist opposition with election reform

South Africa watchdog calls for probe on influence peddling in Zuma's govt

The 355-page report, titled "State of Capture", stopped short of reaching conclusive findings, but is likely to add to pressure on Zuma by demanding a full inquiry within 30 days into the biggest crisis of his scandal-plagued presidency. Police fired stun grenades and used water cannon to disperse demonstrators who had marched to the Union Buildings, where Zuma's offices are located.




Vietnam police arrest anti-government blogger

Vietnamese police on Wednesday detained a prominent blogger for distributing anti-state information, the latest in a crackdown on critics of the country's Communist rulers. Ho Van Hai, 52, was arrested in Ho Chi Minh City and accused of "spreading information and documents on the internet that are against the government of the Social Republic of Vietnam", according to a statement by Ho Chi Minh City police on their website. Despite sweeping reforms to its economy and increasing openness toward social change, including gay, lesbian and transgender rights, Vietnam's ruling Communist Party retains tight media censorship and zero tolerance for criticism.
