Cuba detains dissident artist for celebrating Castro's death | Tuesday, November 29, 2016 2:57 AM
| By Nicole Martinez MIAMI (Reuters) - Cuban police have detained dissident artist Danilo "El Sexto" Maldonado, once declared a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International, after he made a video celebrating the death of Fidel Castro, a dissident human rights group and the artist's girlfriend said on Monday. Castro died on Friday at age 90, a decade after he had retired due to poor health and ceded power to his brother, current President Raul Castro. Maldonado posted a video on social media on Saturday in which he rants against Castro and calls him a "mare," a Cuban pejorative. |
Thailand's parliament to invite prince to become new king | Tuesday, November 29, 2016 2:52 AM
| Thailand's parliament is expected to invite Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn to become the new king on Tuesday, lawmakers said, more than one month after the death of his father, revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej. King Bhumibol, who was the longest-serving head of state in the world when he died at the age of 88, played a stabilising role during decades of often-violent conflict in Thailand. The crown prince's invitation to become monarch will likely allay some public concerns that the succession might not go according to plan.

The suspect, Abdul Razak Ali Artan, was shot and killed by a police officer with less than two years on the force after driving into a group of people and then jumping out of the vehicle and stabbing people with a butcher knife at the school's Columbus campus, said Monica Moll, director of public safety for Ohio State University. Ohio State University Police Chief Craig Stone told a news conference that Artan might have been as old as 20.

U.S. companies hope Trump will stick to business roots, back Cuba ties | Tuesday, November 29, 2016 12:05 AM
| By Patricia Zengerle and Mike Stone WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. companies are looking for ways to persuade President-elect Donald Trump to soften his threats to cancel the Obama administration's opening to Cuba, a reversal they fear could cost them hundreds of millions of dollars. During his campaign, Trump said he thought restoring diplomatic ties with Cuba was fine, but that Democratic President Barack Obama should have pushed harder for concessions from Havana before easing restrictions on travel and trade. On Monday, three days after the death of revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, the Republican president-elect said in a Twitter post that he would end what he referred to as Obama's "deal" if Cuba did not do more for its people. |
Citigroup 'boys' club' disfavors women, lawsuit claims | | By Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) - A former Citigroup Inc financial adviser on Monday filed a lawsuit accusing the bank of running a "boys' club" that favoured men over women, treating her as a "glorified secretary," and firing her in retaliation for whistleblowing activity. Erin Daly is seeking double back pay, unpaid bonuses and punitive damages over the bank's alleged harassment, hostile work environment and unlawful retaliation, according to her lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court. The resident of Manhattan's Upper West side said Citigroup let her go less than two weeks after she complained that her manager demanded inside information from her work on restricted stock offerings, so that he could pass it to favoured clients.

U.S. lawmaker Warren slams Wells Fargo over arbitration position | | By Suzanne Barlyn NEW YORK (Reuters) - Massachusetts Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren on Monday criticized Wells Fargo & Co's decision to require customers affected by its unauthorised accounts scandal to go through arbitration rather than allowing them to sue. The San Francisco-based bank last week asked a U.S. court to uphold contract clauses that mandate arbitration, something financial firms often use to protect against litigation. In a Facebook post on Monday, Warren, a frequent critic of the banking industry, said Wells Fargo's promise to treat customers better in light of the scandal is "meaningless" as long as it is pursuing arbitration.

Ohio State University student injures 11 in car, knife attack | | A student drove a car into a crowd of pedestrians at Ohio State University on Monday morning and then jumped out and stabbed several people with a butcher knife, injuring 11 people, before a police officer shot and killed the attacker, officials said. Abdul Razak Ali Artan was shot and killed within minutes after ploughing into the group by a police officer with less than two years on the force, said Monica Moll, director of public safety for Ohio State University. "It frankly took a piece out of everybody here at our beautiful Ohio State University that this could have happened here," Ohio Governor John Kasich said at a news conference.

Vote recount effort races forward despite Trump team rejection | | By Julia Harte and Steve Holland WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Donald Trump's transition team on Monday pushed back against an effort to recount Nov. 8's presidential election votes, calling the effort "nonsense," but offering no evidence to back a weekend Trump tweet alleging millions of illegal votes. With the clock winding down for voters and candidates to seek recounts in states across the country, Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein requested a recount in Pennsylvania on Monday just hours before the state's deadline. ...

Fewer North Korean workers come to China as border trade tightens | | By Sue-Lin Wong DANDONG, China (Reuters) - A labour agent sat in his bus on a recent frigid morning, waiting to cross the "Friendship Bridge" at China's main border post with North Korea. "I used to bring at least 40-50 North Korean factory workers and waiters across at least once a month but it's less frequent now," said Liu, the labour agent, who did not want to give his full name. "I don't think China wants them to come and work here anymore." Their numbers have, indeed, been dropping of late, said Lu Chao, Director of the Border Study Institute at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences, a Chinese government think-tank.

Brazil's leftist opposition seek Temer probe, impeachment | | By Anthony Boadle BRASILIA (Reuters) - Leftist opponents of Brazil's President Michel Temer sought on Monday to have him investigated and impeached for his alleged role in pressuring a former culture minister to approve a property development. While the impeachment bid is not expected to gain sufficient backing, Brazil's public prosecutor is already studying whether to investigate the charge by the former minister, Marcelo Calero, that Temer had sided with another Cabinet member who lobbied him to override historic preservation rules for a luxury apartment building in Salvador, Brazil's former colonial capital. The latest corruption scandal in Temer's government has added to political uncertainty delaying the recovery of Latin America's largest economy from its worst recession since the 1930s.

Swedish prosecutors earlier this month questioned Assange at the London embassy in an investigation into allegations that he committed rape in Sweden in 2010. Ecuador must deliver a written version of the testimony to Swedish prosecutors and will do so in December, said Ecuador's prosecutor, Galo Chiriboga.
