| China jails former Nanjing city chief for 12 years for graft | | | A court in eastern China on Wednesday sentenced the former Communist Party chief of the major city of Nanjing to 12-1/2 years in jail, after finding him guilty of corruption. Yang Weize, Nanjing's top official, was put under investigation early last year by the party's internal anti-graft watchdog. The court in Ningbo said Yang accepted bribes, either directly or through his wife, worth 16.4 million yuan ($2.38 million) between 2005 and 2014. |
| Myanmar govt 'following the law' in Rakhine, probe panel says | |  A commission set up by Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi to investigate attacks on border posts and the army's brutal response on Wednesday said security forces had abided by the law in a Muslim-majority area of northwestern Rakhine State. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate established the body amid growing international pressure to investigate allegations that Myanmar soldiers had killed and raped civilians and burned down their homes, as well as to allow aid agencies to reach the area. On Tuesday, the body wrapped up a three-day visit to Maungdaw, where at least 86 people have been killed since the Oct. 9 attacks and where the military sweep has prompted about 27,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee across the border to Bangladesh.

The cancelled meetings, revealed in documents seen by Reuters, are the latest on a long list of failed initiatives to improve relations between fractious neighbours who both see the largely stateless Muslim Rohingya at the heart of the crisis as the other nation's problem. Bangladeshi diplomats say the abrupt cancellation of the talks, planned for mid-October, reflected Myanmar's reluctance to deepen bilateral ties and press ahead with talks on security cooperation and the establishment of border liaison officers.

In the weeks since the Nov. 8 election, Google has ramped up efforts to hire Republican lobbying firms and in-house lobbyists to change the composition of its Washington office, according to three lobbyists with knowledge of the matter. The company also posted an advertisement for a manager for conservative outreach and public policy partnership, seeking a "liaison to conservative, libertarian and free market groups." While the position is not new, it gives Google a chance to make a hire that reflects the new political climate.

| Eleven headless bodies found in Yemen's port city Aden - news website | | | Eleven headless bodies have been dumped in a nature reserve in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden, a local news website reported on Wednesday. It was not immediately clear who killed the men and why, but Aden al-Ghad said the condition of the bodies suggested they had been dumped there more than a month ago. Zinke, 55, will be nominated to head the Interior Department, which employs more than 70,000 people across the United States and oversees more than 20 percent of federal land, including national parks like Yellowstone and Yosemite. Zinke's choice was something of a surprise since some Republican officials wanted him to challenge Democratic U.S. Senator Jon Tester of Montana in the 2018 elections.

| Thailand to free jailed Swiss national linked to 1MDB probe: lawyer | |  Thailand will this month release jailed Swiss national Xavier Justo, a possible key witness in the global money-laundering probe linked to Malaysian state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), after he was granted a royal amnesty for a fraud conviction, his lawyer said on Wednesday. Justo leaked several confidential documents from his employer Petrosaudi International relating to its joint venture with 1MDB that were published by Malaysian and international media groups early last year and formed the basis for the money laundering probe. Justo was among 150,000 Thai and foreign inmates who were pardoned or had their sentences commuted by Thailand's new King Maha Vajiralongkorn as the first act of mercy since he ascended the throne earlier this month.
