Myanmar vows action on police abuse after video of beating emerges

By Shwe Yee Saw Myint YANGON (Reuters) - Myanmar has promised to take action against policemen who beat Muslims after footage of villagers being treated violently appeared online amid tension over a government crackdown aimed at rooting out suspected insurgents. Troops have poured into Rakhine State on Myanmar's northwestern border with Bangladesh since gunmen attacked border posts on Oct. 9, killing nine officers. The Myanmar army sweep has sent some 34,000 members of the Rohingya Muslim minority fleeing into neighbouring Bangladesh, the United Nations says.


Three killed in car bomb attack on peacekeepers' Somali HQ

At least three people were killed when a suicide attacker set off a car bomb at a checkpoint outside the main base of an African Union peacekeeping force in the Somali capital on Monday, police said. Islamist al Shabaab militants, who want to topple the Western-backed government, have carried out similar attacks in the past. A Reuters photographer at the scene saw the burnt-out shell of the bomber's car and another vehicle nearby on fire.


Islamic State claims responsibility for Istanbul attack - statement

There was no immediate comment from Turkish officials. "In continuation of the blessed operations that Islamic State is conducting against the protector of the cross, Turkey, a heroic soldier of the caliphate struck one of the most famous nightclubs where the Christians celebrate their apostate holiday," the statement said.

South Korean authorities had been seeking the arrest of Chung Yoo-ra, 20, for her ties to the scandal in which her mother, Choi Soon-sil, is a central figure. Chung had been sought for alleged criminal interference related to her academic record, and other unspecified charges.




Thai election won't happen this year, legislator says

The junta toppled an elected government in 2014 in a bid to enforce calm in a country divided by more than a decade of conflict between a military-backed royalist establishment and populist political forces. Somjet Boonthanom, a member of the military-appointed National Legislative Assembly (NLA), told Reuters that elections would likely be delayed until March or April 2018.
