| 209 FIRs against political parties in Jharkhand | | | Ranchi, April 7 (IANS) A total of 209 FIRs have been registered against political parties in Jharkhand for violating the model code of conduct, an EC press statement said Monday. "The BJP tops the list with 57 followed by the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) with 33. The number of FIRs filed against the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Congress are 32, 26 and 21 respectively," the Election Commission statement said. The remaining FIRs have been lodged against other parties fighting the Lok Sabha election in the state. |

| Hold on death sentence of two Delhi gang rape accused extended | | | New Delhi, April 7 (IANS) The Supreme Court Monday extended its interim order putting on hold the execution of death sentence of Mukesh and Pawan Gupta - two of the four convicts in the Dec 16, 2012, Delhi gangrape case - as it sought material they were relying on to contest high court verdict upholding their conviction and death sentence. A bench of Justice B.S.Chauhan and Justice J. Chelameswar adjourned the hearing till Monday (April 14) as it asked the counsel M.L.Sharma to place before them the postmortem report of the Singapore hospital where the victim was treated and succumbed to her injuries. The vourt asked Sharma to place before it the post mortem report and other material that he was relying upon to contest the conviction of his clients Mukesh and Pawan Gupta and award of death sentence by the trial court and upholding of the same by the high court. |
| 15 killed in Himachal bus accident | | | Shimla, April 7 (IANS) At least 15 people were killed Monday when their overloaded mini-bus rolled down a 400-feet deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district, officials said. Nearly two dozen people were injured in the accident that took place near Timbi in Shillai area, about 110 km from the state capital. Superintendent of Police Sumedha Dwivedi told IANS over phone that all the bodies have been recovered, most of them badly mutilated, from the wreckage of the bus. |

The disabled South African track star, on trial for murder, also apologised to the mother of model Reeva Steenkamp, saying he fired four times through a toilet door at his luxury Pretoria home in the belief he was defending her from an intruder. Steenkamp, a law graduate and model, was hit by at least three rounds fired by Pistorius, one of which - to the head - killed her almost instantly, the court has heard. Reeva's mother June Steenkamp, sitting in the public gallery of the packed Pretoria courtroom, bowed her head and remained steely faced.

| Fighting in Palestinian camp in south Lebanon kills five | | | At least five people were killed in fighting on Monday between Palestinian factions in a refugee camp near Lebanon's southern city of Sidon, local sources said. They said the fighting broke out between fighters from a group orginally linked to Palestinian President Mohammad Abbas's Fatah group and a rival militant organisation. It was not immediately clear what triggered the clashes in the Mieh Mieh camp, in which at least 10 people were wounded. | Egypt court upholds jailing of prominent pro-democracy activists | |  CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian appeals court upheld on Monday the jailing of three prominent liberal pro-democracy activists, the judge said. Last December, a court handed out three-year jail sentences to Ahmed Maher, Ahmed Douma and Mohamed Adel, symbols of the uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak in 2011, for protesting without permission and assaulting the police.
