Rapper Gucci Mane gets 3-1/4-year prison sentence on firearms charges

The rapper known as Gucci Mane was sentenced on Wednesday by a federal court judge in Georgia to three years and three months in prison on firearms charges. "Davis has a long history of violence and of illegally possessing and using guns," Sally Yates, U.S. Mane, 34, will be required as part of a plea agreement to seek mental health treatment once he is released from prison. According to prosecutors, Atlanta police in September 2013 found Mane pacing a street, waving a loaded handgun and making threats.


New way to lose money at Atlantic City's hard-luck casino

The soon-to-be-shuttered Revel Casino in Atlantic City had another bout of bad luck earlier this month when a bag of cash fell from an armored truck. The incident, which came to light Wednesday, occurred on Aug. 6 when armed guards from GardaWorld went to Revel to retrieve cash. The Press of Atlantic City reported that one bag, containing about $20,000 in cash, was left on the roof. Joe Gavaghan, a spokesman for GardaWorld, said the company is cooperating with investigators, but that the company has a strict policy not to comment on investigations.

Holder, the first African-American to head the Justice Department, met with students and then community leaders at a community college during a visit to Ferguson for a briefing on a Justice Department investigation into the Aug. 9 killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown.




Foreign assisted suicide cases in Switzerland double in 4 years

The number of foreigners travelling to Switzerland to commit assisted suicide doubled over a four-year period, a study published in the Journal of Medical Ethics said on Thursday. In 2012, 172 foreigners took their lives in Switzerland, which has liberal euthanasia rules, up from 86 in 2009, with citizens from Germany and Britain making up almost two-thirds of the total, the study found. Assisted suicide has been legal in Switzerland since the 1940s, if performed by someone with no direct interest in the death.


Stewart to skip third straight NASCAR race after fatal crash

(Reuters) - Tony Stewart will skip this weekend's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee, the third consecutive event the three-time champion has missed since being involved in a fatal on-track accident. Jeff Burton will replace Stewart for the second straight week, Stewart-Haas Racing said Wednesday. Stewart, one of the highest-paid drivers in NASCAR, was competing in a sprint car race on Aug. 9 in upstate New York when he clipped the car of 20-year-old driver Kevin Ward Jr. Ward was sent careening into a retaining wall while Stewart continued racing. Stewart, 43, skipped the NASCAR race at Watkins Glen, New York, the following day and then sat out the Michigan 400 last week.

Dias Kadyrbayev, a Kazakh national, is one of three college friends of Tsarnaev charged with hampering the probe into the blasts, which killed three people and injured more than 260 near the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon. His attorney, Robert Stahl, wrote in an email on Wednesday that Kadyrbayev "will plead tomorrow," but that the details had not yet been made public. He wrote that he will provide further details on Thursday, when a previously scheduled hearing will be held at federal court in Boston.




U.S. Supreme Court puts hold on gay marriage in Virginia

Supreme Court stopped gay marriage in Virginia from going ahead on Wednesday, staying an appeals court ruling that had struck down a state ban. The court granted a stay application filed by opponents of gay marriage. The action was not a ruling on the merits of gay marriage, but means that a July 28 pro-gay marriage ruling by the Richmond, Virginia-based 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will not be implemented while litigation continues.


FBI warns healthcare companies they are targeted by hackers

"The FBI has observed malicious actors targeting healthcare related systems, perhaps for the purpose of obtaining Protected Healthcare Information (PHI) and/or Personally Identifiable Information (PII)," the agency said in a "Flash" alert obtained by Reuters on Wednesday. ...
