9:37:22 AM
Belgian police detained four people after a series of raids across the country on Friday to dismantle a group suspected of recruiting jihadist fighters for Syria, federal prosecutors said. The raids were not linked to an operation earlier this month that foiled a plan to attack Belgian police nor to recent deadly militant attacks in Paris, prosecutors added. "This file concerns people who want to go to Syria and fight there. The investigation concentrates on the organisation which recruits those persons and sends them to Syria," federal prosecutors said in a statement.

Islamic State's Egypt wing claims deadliest attacks in months -official Twitter
9:04:57 AM
By Yusri Mohamed, Ali Abdelaty and Mostafa Hashem CAIRO (Reuters) - Islamic State's Egypt wing claimed a series of attacks that killed at least 27 security personnel on Thursday in some of the worst anti-government violence in months, after commemorations around the anniversary of the 2011 uprising turned deadly in the past week. Egypt's government faces an Islamist insurgency based in Sinai and growing discontent with what critics perceive as heavy-handed security tactics. A series of tweets from the Sinai Province's Twitter account claimed responsibility for each of the four attacks that took place in North Sinai province within hours of one another on Thursday night. Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, Egypt's most active militant group, changed its name to Sinai Province last year after swearing allegiance to Islamic State, the hardline Sunni militant group that has seized swathes of Iraq and Syria, drawing U.S.-led airstrikes.

Three U.S. contractors killed in "insider attack" in Afghanistan

An Afghan soldier killed three U.S. contractors and wounded a fourth on Thursday at Kabul's military airport, an Afghan air force official said. The Afghan air force official said it was not clear why the attacker had killed the advisers. "An investigation has been opened." The international force in Afghanistan confirmed the shooting took place on Thursday evening.

China's new tech rules play to local firms' strengths
5:02:54 AM
By Gerry Shih, Michael Martina and Joseph Menn BEIJING/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Draft Chinese government regulation would force technology vendors to meet stringent security tests before they can sell to China's banks, an acceleration of efforts to curb the country's reliance on foreign technology that has drawn a sharp response from U.S. business groups. Western companies say the rules have not yet been formally adopted, and some said they believed Beijing would retreat on some of the most onerous ideas, including demanding that firms' proprietary source code be reviewable. On Wednesday, 18 American business groups urged Beijing to postpone rolling out the regulation, which they argued were motivated by protectionism as well as security concerns that intensified in the wake of disclosures of U.S. spying techniques by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

Canada spy agency given more powers to disrupt terror attacks - media
4:48:55 AM
Canada's main spy agency will get new powers aimed at disrupting potential terror attacks under security legislation to be unveiled on Friday, Canadian media said on Thursday. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), which currently only gathers information and then hands it over to police for action, will be given powers to act itself to prevent potential attacks, Canadian media said. Under the new law, which will be presented in Parliament, CSIS will be able to block financial transactions, stop people from travelling abroad to join extremist groups and intercept material that can be used in an attack. "The goal is for CSIS to move from an intelligence-gathering service to an agency that will have the power to disrupt or diminish potential terrorist threats under appropriate judicial oversight," CBC News quoted an unnamed source as saying.
