Police probing JonBenet Ramsey murder won't give up on solving case

Boulder Police Chief Greg Testa said in an unusual videotaped message that his department will not participate in a flurry of television specials, documentaries and news articles slated to run between now and December. The 6-year-old girl's bludgeoned and strangled body was found by her father in the basement of her family's Boulder home on December 26, 1996, a day after her parents reported the child missing and a ransom note left in the house.




Philippines wants mandatory drug tests for college admissions

By Neil Jerome Morales MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippines is stepping up President Rodrigo Duterte's battle on drugs with incoming college freshmen set to face tests for illegal drug use from next year, an education official said on Friday. A wave of 2,400 killings unleashed in a war on drugs since Duterte came to power two months ago has gained popular support in the Southeast Asian nation, but has alarmed the United Nations and the United States, Manila's close ally. The government seeks to make drug testing a requirement for all incoming college students, said Julito Vitriolo, the executive director of the Commission on Higher Education.


Peru sentences soldiers to jail for 1985 massacre

A Peruvian court on Thursday sentenced former army officers and soldiers to jail for killing dozens of peasants in an Andean village 31 years ago during the height of a conflict between the government and Shining Path rebels. In so-called Accomarca massacre in August 1985, 71 villagers died, including 23 children. Soldiers stormed the town near Ayacucho in search of subversive material but found no ammunition, explosives or Shining Path propaganda, according to Peru's truth commission.


Turkey removes about 8,000 security personnel in latest purge

Pakistani man sentenced in U.S. for trying to export military equipment

A Pakistani man was sentenced on Thursday to 33 months in a U.S. prison for attempting to export military equipment for the Pakistani military without a license, the U.S. Justice Department said. Syed Vaqar Ashraf had previously pleaded guilty to trying to procure gyroscopes and illegally ship them to Pakistan so they could be used by the Pakistani military, the Justice Department said in a news release.


Rio asks to keep Brazil national security forces past Olympics

Rio de Janeiro will try to convince Brazil's government to leave in place indefinitely the national security force that protected the Olympics to cut down on crime amid a budget crisis, state public safety secretary Jose Mariano Beltrame said on Thursday. Brazil deployed some 85,000 police and troops, or roughly twice the number at London's Olympic Games in 2012, to protect locals and around 500,000 tourists who visited the Rio Games. The federal government also loaned 2.9 billion reais ($890 million) to cover security spending during the Olympics.
