South African state prosecutor drops fraud charges against Gordhan

Worries that Gordhan could be prosecuted or even removed from his job have also increased the risk that credit rating agencies would downgrade South Africa to "junk" status, undermining efforts to revive economic growth. The rand gained as much as 1.6 percent against the dollar, while bonds firmed as the head of the National Prosecuting Authority, Shaun Abrahams, read his decision at a media conference in the capital, Pretoria.

A verdict is due in December, just months before a March 15 parliamentary election in which Wilders' Freedom Party is vying for first place with Prime Minister Mark Rutte's conservative VVD, which rules in a fragile coalition with Labour. Wilders, who said on Friday he would not attend the hearings but just be represented by his lawyer, faces a fine of up to 7,400 euros ($8,100) and two years in jail for the remarks in early 2014.

Turkey's crackdown since rogue soldiers tried to seize power on July 15 has alarmed Western allies and rights groups, who fear President Tayyip Erdogan is using the coup attempt to crush dissent. The Istanbul prosecutor's office said the staff from the Cumhuriyet daily, one of few media outlets still critical of Erdogan, were suspected of committing crimes on behalf of Kurdish militants and the network of Fethullah Gulen, a U.S.-based cleric.

The weakest German retail sales in two years, a fall in oil prices and one of the toughest month in years for bond markets all made for a shaky start in Europe where the STOXX 600 index dropped 0.4 percent. "The Clinton story of course has had an impact," said Richard Benson, co-head of portfolio management at currency fund Millennium Global in London.




Gambia opposition parties unite behind candidate for presidential election

Seven Gambian opposition parties united late on Sunday behind businessman Adama Barrow, endorsing him as the main challenger to President Yahya Jammeh in elections scheduled for December. Barrow, 51, became leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), the country's largest opposition party, in September. "I am overwhelmed and will work with the opposition and the Gambian people to make the Gambia a better place for all of us," Barrow said in an acceptance speech at a convention of seven opposition parties.

"Please forgive me." Choi returned to South Korea early on Sunday from Germany, where she had been staying, and was ready to answer prosecutors' questions, her lawyer said earlier.

Pakistan's top court blocks execution of schizophrenic murder convict

By Asad Hashim ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan's Supreme Court on Monday blocked the execution of a paranoid schizophrenic murder convict pending a review of an earlier ruling that his condition was not a permanent mental disorder and therefore not legally relevant, his lawyers said. Rights groups have denounced the possible execution of Imdad Ali, 50, who government doctors certified as suffering from paranoid schizophrenia in 2012, following his conviction for the 2001 murder of a cleric.


Turkish prosecutors say operation launched against Cumhuriyet executives

Police officer stands outside the office of Turkish   daily "Cumhuriyet" in IstanbulTurkish authorities ordered the detention of executives from Cumhuriyet newspaper on Monday on accusations they committed crimes on behalf of Kurdish militants and the "Gulenist Terror Organisation" (FETO), the Istanbul prosecutor's office said. An investigation was launched in August into several executives after allegations that the newspaper's publications were of a nature that legitimised a July 15 failed coup, the prosecutor's office said in a statement. Ankara blames the supporters of U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen for the coup attempt.
