New York's Met cancels opera after powder sprinkled into orchestra pit

New York City's Metropolitan Opera canceled its Saturday afternoon performance of "Guillaume Tell," during the second intermission after an audience member sprinkled an unidentified powder into the orchestra pit, the opera said. The Met said on its Facebook page that it also canceled the Saturday evening performance of "L'Italiana in Algeri," while police investigate the incident. There were no reports of any injuries or any harmful reaction to the unidentified substance, though the theater was evacuated, and the New York Police Department dispatched a special unit to investigate the incident, Officer Tiffany Phillips said.

Icelanders had looked set to oust the governing centre-right government in its current form, though ruling coalition partner the Independence Party, took a strong lead. Both the Independence Party and the Pirate Party have ruled out working together, however, though this could change during negotiations in the days to come.




India says destroys four posts along contested border with Pakistan

The attack comes a day after India and Pakistan traded accusations that each had killed civilians in cross-border shelling in the Kashmir region, which is claimed in its entirety by both countries but controlled in part by each. Heavy casualties inflicted," the Indian army's Northern Command said in a statement on its Twitter account late on Saturday.

Rajoy's centre-right People's Party is set to form a minority government, after gaining support from the smaller Ciudadanos ("Citizens") party and the tacit backing of many Socialist lawmakers who abstained in the confidence vote. Rajoy needed to win a simply majority in parliament to cement his return to power. ...




Turkish opposition lawmaker injured in armed attack - media

A deputy leader and lawmaker from Turkey's main opposition party was shot in the leg in the western province of Aydin by an unidentified assailant, broadcaster Haberturk reported on Saturday. Bulent Tezcan from Republican Peoples' Party (CHP) was attacked at a restaurant in his electoral constituency, Haberturk said. The attack comes two months after the convoy of Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of CHP, came under an attack by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militant group.


Gunmen kill four at Shi'ite Muslim gathering in Karachi

By Syed Raza Hassan KARACHI, Pakistan (Reuters) - Gunmen on motorcycles killed at least four people at a religious gathering of Shi'ite Muslims in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, on Saturday, police said, in the latest attack claimed by the Sunni militant group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi's Al Alami faction. Lashkar-e-Jhangvi's Al Alami faction, which targets Shi'ites and Pakistan's security forces, killed more than 60 police cadets in the southwestern city of Quetta on Monday in an attack in conjunction with Islamic State. "Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Al Alami accepts responsibility for those killed in this attack, and we announce that there is no room for the enemies of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad in Pakistan," said Ali bin Sufyan, the group's spokesperson, in a statement.

Turkish court imposes foreign travel ban on co-chair of Kurdish opposition

A Turkish court banned the co-leader of Turkey's pro-Kurdish opposition from travelling abroad as part of a court case in which she has been accused of being a member of an armed terrorist group, Hurriyet daily reported on Saturday. Figen Yuksekdag, co-chair of Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), is facing jail time up to 15 years over comments she made last year in the southeastern border town of Suruc. HDP described the court's decision to bar Yuksekdag from foreign travel as 'political and arbitrary', saying in a statement that it will make a formal appeal for its overturn.


Mercedes team member robbed at gunpoint

By Alan Baldwin MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A member of the world championship-winning Mercedes Formula One team was robbed at gunpoint when he arrived in Mexico for Sunday's grand prix, a team spokesman said. The robbery happened on Wednesday as the team member, who was not a high-ranking employee, was in a car taking him to his hotel from the airport and both he and his driver had watches and wallets taken. Nobody was injured in the incident and the team member remained in Mexico for the race at the Hermanos Rodriguez circuit.
