Sorin Grindeanu named as Romania's prime minister designate

Grindeanu, a 43-year-old mathematician and former deputy mayor of the western city of Timisoara, is expected to win parliament's backing as early as next week. His party won a Dec. 11 election by a wide margin and together with coalition partner ALDE, has 250 of the 465 seats in the two houses of parliament. Hundreds of people have been killed in recent years in resource-rich Xinjiang, on the borders of central Asia, in violence between the Muslim Uighur people who call the region home and ethnic majority Han Chinese. China denies any repression in Xinjiang.




Indians line up at banks to deposit savings or see them disappear

"I'm here to deposit a few old notes before the deadline expires," said Rakesh Kumar, queuing outside a bank in New Delhi. "But I expect the government and RBI (central bank) to quickly replenish banks and ATMs with new notes so that we can withdraw without any trouble." Only 35-40 percent of ATM machines were currently dispensing cash, according to Ramaswamy Venkatachalam, managing director, India and South Asia, Fidelity Information Services, a banking technology provider.

Turkey detains 30 Islamic State suspects in Adana - Dogan agency

Turkish police detained 30 people suspected of links to Islamic State in the southern province of Adana, the Dogan news agency reported on Friday, as clashes between Turkish soldiers and the jihadist group intensified in northern Syria. It said the suspects were taken to Adana police headquarters after routine health checks. Turkey launched a military incursion into Syria on Aug. 24 in support of Syrian rebels to try to drive Islamic State away from the border area, and has frequently carried out raids on suspected jihadist safe-houses in Istanbul and other cities.

After a parliamentary vote, Turkey is set to hold a referendum on the changes by spring, a move that would enable President Tayyip Erdogan to acquire the executive presidency he has long sought. Erdogan has turned a largely ceremonial presidency into a powerful platform by drawing on his unrivalled popularity.




Beijing police punished after environmentalist's death in custody

Two Beijing police officers have been punished following the death of an environmentalist in custody in May, state media said on Friday, a case that sparked public disquiet about China's law enforcement methods. Lei Yang, 29, was arrested in a massage parlour as part of a police operation against prostitution and died hours later after choking on his own vomit. While prosecutors decided last week not to press charges against the police officers, two of them have now been punished, the official China Daily said, citing the Beijing police.

Australian police charge man over New Year's Eve threats in Sydney

Australian counter-terror officers arrested a 40-year-old man at Sydney Airport, after he disembarked from a flight from London, and charged him with making online threats "relating to New Year's Eve" festivities in Sydney, police said on Friday. The arrest follows police raids across the southern city of Melbourne a week ago, which authorities said foiled an Islamic State-inspired plot to attack prominent sites in the city on Christmas Eve. Damien O'Neil was arrested late on Thursday and refused bail by a court on Friday.

China official dealing with Taiwan accused of bribery

China's state prosecutor on Friday formally accused a former deputy head of China's Taiwan Affairs Office with bribery and abuse of power, setting the stage for his trial. Gong Qinggai was put under investigation by the ruling Communist Party in January. In a brief statement, the state prosecutor said Gong abused his power to "seek benefits for others" and illegally took large sums of money, meaning he will be prosecuted for bribery.
