| Time to end al Qaeda presence in Falluja - Iraq's Maliki | |  By Ahmed Rasheed BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Wednesday it was time to clear al Qaeda-linked militants out of the rebel-held city of Falluja, but set no deadline for any military assault. The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), an al Qaeda offshoot also on the frontlines of Syria's civil war, overran Falluja with help from other Sunni Muslim groups on January 1. Iraqi troops and security forces have set up a loose cordon around the city, 50 km (31 miles) west of Baghdad, and have clashed sporadically with insurgents inside, but Maliki has said community leaders and tribesmen should force ISIL to withdraw, in order to spare Falluja more bloodshed and destruction. "The time has come to settle this issue and end the presence of this gang in this city and save its people from their evil," Maliki said in his weekly televised address to the nation.

| Scholars urge Britain to open 400-year-old state files | | | By Sarah Young LONDON (Reuters) - Eminent British scholars have challenged the government to release a cache of secret files dating back almost 400 years that they say could spur a reappraisal of some contentious episodes of British colonial history and the Cold War. The foreign ministry only publicly admitted the existence of the so-called "special collection" of some 600,000 dossiers in 2011, when an historian came across a 45-year-old memo that referred to it. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) says it did not have the resources to sort through the files, despite laws requiring disclosure, but that it is now reviewing them to prioritise material of greatest public interest for release. But a group of 27 scholars from the British Academy used a letter to the Guardian newspaper to demand that in a free society all available records be released to ensure a full account of Britain's colonial past or the espionage mysteries of the Cold War. |
| 62 vacant ACB posts to soon be filled, HC told | | | New Delhi, Jan 22 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday disposed of a plea seeking recruitment of officials in the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) after the Delhi government informed it that it was taking steps on the petition. The government told a bench of Justice Pradeep Nandrajog and Justice Jayant Nath that it was soon going to hire officials for the vacant positions. The court was hearing a plea filed by advocate Gaurav Kumar Bansal requesting directions to the government to fill the vacancies. The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed on a Right to Information (RTI) reply received by the ACB where it was informed that 62 positions were vacant. |
| Tests confirm drugs in Pakistani truck is brown sugar | | | Srinagar, Jan 22 (IANS) A narcotics consignment seized in Jammu and Kashmir from a truck coming from Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-administered Kashmir Jan 17 was brown sugar, forensic scientists confirmed Wednesday. After the seizure of 114 packets concealed under almonds, police arrested the truck driver and launched an investigation. Today we received the lab report confirming that the contraband is brown sugar," police told IANS. Trade across the Line of Control (LoC) was disrupted Jan 17 after the arrest of the driver and seizure of the vehicle by India. |
| Prosecutor asks Ribery and Benzema be cleared in sex trial | |  A prosecutor asked on Wednesday that French soccer internationals Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema be discharged of solicitation of an underage prostiture. "It is impossible for the accusation to prove that Franck Ribery was aware" that Zahia Dehar, a prostitute-turned-fashion model, was under 18 -- the age of majority in France, prosecutor Jean-Julien Xavier-Rolai told the Correctional Court of Paris. Xavier-Rolin added that Benzema should also be discharged. Real Madrid striker Benzema and Bayern Munich forward Ribery, who were not attending the four-day trial, were being tried on charges of paying Dehar when she was aged 16 and 17.

| Anelka calls for FA to drop charges over quenelle salute | |  By Mike Collett LONDON (Reuters) - Nicolas Anelka used his Facebook and Twitter accounts to ask the English FA to drop charges against him for his quenelle salute and again denied he was anti-Semitic or racist. The West Bromwich Albion striker has until 1800 GMT on Thursday to respond to the charge that he made an improper gesture. The 34-year-old former France international maintains the gesture he made after scoring the first of his two goals in West Brom's 3-3 draw at West Ham on December 28 was not anti-Semitic, but instead a tribute to his French comedian friend Dieudonne M'Bala M'Bala who invented it. He wants to call a witness who is an expert in French language and culture who is living in France to put his gesture in context for the FA.

| Ugandan woman identifies Delhi minister, woman officer to probe case | | | New Delhi, Jan 22 (IANS) A Ugandan woman who was allegedly assaulted by Somnath Bharti during his vigilante-style raid last week has identified the Delhi law minister after seeing video footage from a news channel and newspaper clippings, police said Wednesday, as a woman sub-inspector was appointed to investigate the case. Police said five women - two from Uganda and three from Nigeria - who were allegedly victimised by Bharti and supporters of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on the night of Jan 16 recorded their statements before a metropolitan magistrate Tuesday. "One of them has identified four people, including Bharti, when police showed her the video footage from news channels and newspaper clippings," a police officer said. |
| Delhi transport minister defends law minister Bharti | | | New Delhi, Jan 22 (IANS) Delhi Transport Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj Wednesday defended his cabinet colleague, Law Minister Somnath Bharti, for trying to bust a sex-and-drug racket after women's rights groups demanded action against him by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. "Ask any random 100 people in the area whether there is a drug and sex racket operating... ask them if what Somnath Bharti did was wrong," he said. "If you as a common citizen witness a sex and drug racket, won't you inform the police," he asked. |
| Tharoor should distance himself from his post: NCP | | | New Delhi, Jan 22 (IANS) The NCP Wednesday said union minister Shashi Tharoor should "disassociate" himself from his post till the probe into the death of his wife, Sunanda Pushkar, was over. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which supports the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre, clarified it was not asking Tharoor to resign. "The matter (Pushkar's death) is serious and investigations are on, and Tharoor has rightly pledged he will cooperate with the investigating agencies. We think Tharoor will himself disassociate from his ministerial responsibility till the investigation is over," party spokesperson D.P. Tripathi said. |
| Bengal ragging death: School failed to empathise, says REPA | | | Kolkata, Jan 22 (IANS) The Right to Education and Protection Authority (REPA), probing the ragging incident that led to the death of a Class 5 student in a West Bengal school, in its report Wednesday blamed the school authorities for not taking complaints of ragging seriously. The school authorities failed to "empathise" with the girl over complaints of harassment by senior students. Eleven-year-old Oindrila Das, student of Christ Church School at Dum Dum in North 24 Parganas district, died Sep 11, a week after she was allegedly locked up inside the school toilet by senior students who demanded money from her. |
| Lusofonia Games: Probe dishes out unpalatable food | | | Panaji, Jan 22 (IANS) A government probe into packed food portions given to over 300 vehicle drivers on the eve of the Lusofonia Games being held in Goa has revealed that these were stale and unfit for consumption. The Games authorities have issued a warning to the catering agency which provided the food, tested by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) after complaints by the drivers of the fleet of vehicles used by athletes and officials. "After the incident, we have taken an immediate decision to not provide food packs to drivers anymore. The catering agency has been issued a warning," Pawan Sain, Venue Development and Operations Function Area (FA) Head, Lusofonia Games, told IANS. |
