| Kolkata, Jan 23 (IANS) The West Bengal Commission for Women Thursday ordered a probe into the gang rape of a tribal woman allegedly at the behest of a kangaroo court. Taking suo motu cognizance of the horrific incident ghat has raised the heckles across the state, it demanded harshest punishment for the perpetrators. We will ensure that the perpetrators of the crime, including the tribal headman who ordered the barbarism, is meted out harshest punishment," commission chairperson Sunanda Mukherjee said. Mukherjee also laid emphasis on the need for sensitising the tribal communities in the state to prevent such incidents. |

The trial of Zhao Changqing was initially adjourned on Wednesday after he dismissed his two lawyers, a decision that would help him delay his case, one of his lawyers, Zhang Xuezhong, told Reuters by telephone. China's government has waged a 10-month drive against the "New Citizens' Movement", of which Zhao was a member. The hearings against members of the New Citizens' Movement are China's highest-profile political trials in years. |
| Egypt state violence at "unprecedented" level since July - Amnesty |

 Egypt has seen state violence on an "unprecedented scale" since the army overthrew Islamist President Mohamed Mursi last July following mass protests again his rule, Amnesty International said in a report on Thursday. Egypt's authorities "quash dissent and trample on human rights", Amnesty said, pointing to mass arrests, pressure on the freedom of expression and the introduction of a law that limits the right to protest. The report came out two days before the third anniversary of the mass uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
