| Tejpal case: Woman complains about slanderous email | | | Panaji, Jan 30 (IANS) The woman journalist who has accused Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal of sexual assault has officially complained about a slanderous email aimed at maligning her image, Goa Police said Thursday. The complaint was addressed to the superintendent of police (Crime Branch), Deputy Inspector General O.P. Mishra told reporters at the police headquarters here. A Goa Police team was on its way back from Mumbai after officially recording the woman's statement, he said. They are on their way back to Goa now," Mishra said. |
| Ribery and Benzema discharged in sex trial | |  PARIS (Reuters) - France soccer internationals Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema have been discharged of solicitation of an underage prostitute, the Paris Correctional Tribunal said on Thursday. Real Madrid striker Benzema and Bayern Munich forward Ribery, who did not attend their trial, were being tried on charges of paying prostitute-turned-fashion model Zahia Dehar when she was aged 16 and 17. Ribery has admitted paying her for sex but said he did not know her age. Benzema has denied having any sexual relations with Dehar. Paying for sex is not illegal in France but underage prostitution is. ...

The National Anti-Terrorism Committee said the bombers, whose attacks raised fears of further violence before the Sochi Winter Olympics next week, were members of a militant group in Dagestan in the restive North Caucasus in southern Russia. Kejriwal, who became chief minister of Delhi after his one-year-old Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) swept to power last month, will now contest the national elections due by May. His party's key anti-corruption platform is seen as having considerable appeal among urban voters. But his stand on village councils - unelected all-male bodies which have issued many misogynistic decrees, including ordering 'honour killings' - contrasts with that of some women's groups who want them dismantled. "No, it is not a question of banning these panchayats," Kejriwal told Thomson Reuters Foundation late on Monday, referring to "Khap Panchayats", the name given to village councils in rural north India.

| Two dozen diagnostic centres sealed in Bihar | | | Patna, Jan 30 (IANS) At least two dozen diagnostic centres were sealed in Bihar's Purnia district after they were found to be flouting prescribed norms, officials said Thursday. A total of 24 diagnostic centres were sealed after an inspection of around 40 such centres, said Purnia civil surgeon S.N. Jha, adding: "The administration will take similar action against fake doctors and pathologists." Jha told IANS over telephone that the administration is committed to rooting out fake medical practices in the district. He said that most of the diagnostic centres were flouting the guidelines prescribed in the Pre-concept and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique Act and they have no records of patients. Last year 31 diagnostic centres were sealed, said an official. |

| Nine held, huge amount of ganja, arms recovered in Bengal | | | Siliguri, Jan 30 (IANS) Nine people were arrested and ganja worth over Rs.5 crore, besides arms and ammunition including an AK 47 rifle, were seized in West Bengal's Darjeeling district, police said Thursday. The nine accused were dressed in military fatigues and were arrested from Siliguri in the district late Wednesday night in a joint operation by the police and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). "In a joint operation carried out by the police and DRI, we have confiscated eight tonnes of ganja, a large cache of arms and ammunition including an AK 47, and arrested nine people who were dressed as army officers as they were trying to smuggle the goods to Kolkata from Nagaland," Siliguri Police Commissioner Jagmohan said Thursday. |
| Contractor held for supplying explosives to Maoists | | | Bhubaneswar, Jan 30 (IANS) A building contractor was Thursday arrested in Odisha's Malkangiri district for supplying explosives to Maoists, an official said. Samarendra Bisoi (28) alias Tinku was arrested after fifteen gelatine sticks and other explosives were found at his construction site in Marigata village, 700 km from here. "He confessed that he had supplied explosives to the rebels five times in the past. The latest explosives were found from a site where he is building a school hostel," Inspector-in-Charge S.K.
