| Typo trips up Texas lawmaker as Tweet suggests gay-marriage turnaround | | A staunchly conservative Republican Texas lawmaker and foe of same-sex marriage found himself the target of jokes after a Tweet was mistakenly sent in his name that read "Marriage=One Man & One Man." The office of State Senator Dan Patrick quickly deleted the Tweet, sent a new one that read "Marriage is between one man and one woman. Period," and jokingly said the lawmaker was looking for a new director of social media. But the damage has been done and a fresh Twitter hashtag "#PatrickTwitterTypos" spawned, with users of the service inserting errors into well-worn political clichés. Some included "Texans deserve lower taxis" and "I'm pro-life jacket and I boat." Patrick sent his initial Tweet shortly after a federal court judge on Wednesday ruled that the Texas ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.

| Britain opens inquiry into letters to IRA suspects | | | By Belinda Goldsmith LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron announced on Thursday an independent inquiry into letters sent to IRA suspects, after an angry response to the freeing of an Irishman accused of a 1982 bombing that killed four soldiers in London. Cameron said it was clear that there had been a "dreadful mistake" in the case of John Downey, who walked free from a London court this month because of a letter which mistakenly told him he was longer being sought for prosecution. Cameron said an independent judge with full access to government files and officials would lead the review and report back by the end of May. Britain's Northern Ireland Minister Theresa Villiers said the letters, 187 of which have been sent as part of a 1998 peace deal, tell their recipients that they are no longer being sought for prosecution but do not amount to immunity from arrest. Downey, 62, from County Donegal in Ireland, was charged with murdering four members of the Royal Household Cavalry who were killed 32 years ago when a car bomb exploded in Hyde Park as they paraded towards Buckingham Palace on July 20. |
| Protests, barricades bring Venezuela's 'Cordial City' to a halt | | By Brian Ellsworth SAN CRISTOBAL, Venezuela (Reuters) - Piles of glass, a trashed refrigerator and the burned remains of a car litter the streets of the Pirineos neighborhood in the Venezuelan city of San Cristobal, giving it the look of a community under siege. In fact, the residents of this middle-class area have created the disorder themselves as part of anti-government protests demanding President Nicolas Maduro resign. The sporadic demonstrations that kicked off two months ago in San Cristobal have turned into a national opposition protest movement and shuttered this city of 250,000 known as the "Cordial City" for its residents' reserved Andean chivalry. Protesters say this western region of Venezuela near the Colombian border, the tail end of the Andes mountains before they drop off toward the Caribbean, suffers some of the worst of the country's rampant crime and most severe product shortages.

| China's role in Hong Kong under spotlight after attack on editor | | By James Pomfret and Greg Torode HONG KONG (Reuters) - A senior Chinese official on Thursday condemned the daylight stabbing of an influential newspaper editor in Hong Kong in a rare bid by Beijing to address rising public anger over China's perceived interference in the financial hub's affairs. Police have made no arrests nor established any motive for the stabbing of Kevin Lau, a former chief editor of the Ming Pao newspaper, by two men, that left him fighting for his life. Suspicions have spread, however, that powerful individuals from mainland China or pro-Beijing allies opposed to the city's push for full democracy may have had a hand in the attack. His stabbing could cause a backlash against Beijing.

| Baluch protesters walk across Pakistan to spotlight army abuse | | By Syed Raza Hassan ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Relatives of rebels, activists and ordinary people who have gone missing in a lawless Pakistani province appealed to the United Nations for help on Thursday after walking across Pakistan for months to draw attention to their plight. Bodies of hundreds of pro-independence rebels have been found across the Baluchistan province and many more have gone missing in the past several years, in a little-reported conflict in a remote corner on Pakistan's Iranian border. Baluch activists say the bodies are evidence that the army is pursuing a systematic 'kill and dump' campaign to crush pro-independence dissent - a charge the army has repeatedly denied. On Thursday, dozens of those who say their family members were abducted or killed reached Islamabad after a 2,300 km walk from Baluchistan which started last October - a rare act of dissent by the often frightened relatives of the abductees.
