Turkish parliament delivers blow to schools run by Erdogan rival

The government has accused cleric Fethullah Gulen, whose followers wield influence in the police and judiciary, of concocting a graft scandal to compromise Erdogan and his government. The scandal broke with police raids on December 17 but ties between the ex-allies have been tense for several years The government's initial moves to shut down cram centres late last year escalated those tensions ahead of March 30 municipal election, seen as a critical test of support for Erdogan after 11 years in power. Their respected prep schools help spread influence across a nationwide network, and shutting them will deprive Hizmet of a chief source of financing.




Woman who wanted to meet Rahul Gandhi burnt to death

Guwahati, March 1 (IANS) A woman who had come to meet Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi during his Assam tour Wednesday, but stayed outside the venue, was burnt to death by her husband, police said Saturday. Superintendent of Police Amanjeet Kaur said a case of unnatural death had been registered. She said the victim, Bonti Chutia, died of burn injuries, while her husband, Someswar Chutia, had also sustained 35 percent burn injuries. Kaur clarified that the victim was not the who was shown on television kissing Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.


Close brothel, orders Delhi court

New Delhi, March 1 (IANS) A special court here ordered shutting down of a brothel here and awarded one year jail term to a woman for pushing a girl into flesh trade. Delhi Police conducted a raid and rescued the victim.


Doctors' strike: Five patients die in Kanpur

Leaders of the striking doctors said they will not budge and refused to sign death certificates. They demanded the immediate release of their peers and accused police of planting illegal weapons in their hostels and victimizing the junior doctors. The stand-off started after a patient's attendant approached Samajwadi Party legislator Irfan Solanki to ask doctors to treat the patient.


At least 13 killed in north Yemen clashes - security source

At least 13 people died when Shi'ite Muslim fighters clashed with security forces in northern Yemen on Friday, government sources said, underlining the chaos still gripping the country two years after mass protests ousted its leader. The fighters were from the Houthi movement which is seeking to strengthen its hold on the north - one of a string of challenges facing an interim government also battling southern separatists, al Qaeda-linked militants and an economic crisis. Local authorities said two soldiers were killed in the attack and four others were wounded when Houthis attacked a security checkpoint in the northwestern al Jawf province, according to state news agency Saba. An exchange of fire took place as a result of the attack and three of the Houthi attackers were killed and several others were then arrested, a statement by the local authorities said.


Doctors attack UP legislator

Lucknow, Mar 1 (IANS) Doctors at a government hospital attacked a Samajwadi Party legislator in Kanpur after which clashes erupted between the doctors and the lawmaker's supporters, police said. The melee began late Friday after some problems faced by a patient were brought to legislator Irfan Solanki's notice.
