| U.S. says Toyota to pay $1.2 billion penalty over safety issues | |  WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Toyota will pay $1.2 billion to resolve a criminal probe into its handling of consumer complaints over safety issues, the U.S. Justice Department said on Wednesday. Toyota admitted it misled U.S. consumers by concealing and making deceptive statements about two safety issues, each of which caused a type of unintended acceleration, the Justice Department said. | S.Africa watchdog: Zuma benefitted from "excessive" $23 million home makeover | |  By Ed Cropley PRETORIA (Reuters) - President Jacob Zuma benefitted "unduly" from a $23 million state-funded security upgrade to his home that included a cattle enclosure and an amphitheatre, South Africa's corruption watchdog said on Wednesday in a damning report six weeks before an election. Public Protector Thuli Madonsela accused Zuma of conduct "inconsistent with his office" and said he should repay a reasonable part of the unnecessary renovations, which also included a chicken run and a swimming pool that had been justified as "fire-fighting equipment". The findings were likely to further hurt the image of the scandal-plagued Zuma and his ruling African National Congress (ANC) in May elections, although the former liberation movement that has ruled since the 1994 end of apartheid is still expected to win. The ANC, which has staunchly supported the president over several previous allegations of corruption, was due to hold a news conference later in the day.

| Wife of professor whose hand was chopped off found dead | | | Kochi, March 19 (IANS) The 48-year-old wife of a college professor, whose right hand was chopped off by activists of the Popular Front of India (PFI), was found dead in her house Wednesday, police said. Her husband T.J. Joseph teaches Malayalam at the New Man College in Thodupuzha, around 200 km from state capital Thiruvananthapuram. Joseph's right hand was chopped off by PFI activists July 4, 2010 when he was returning home along with his family members from the Sunday Mass. The PFI was said to be upset after Joseph reportedly prepared a question paper for a college examination that had allegedly inflammatory remarks on Prophet Mohammed. Over two dozen PFI activists were arrested. |
| Forest fire rages near Tirumala temple | | | Tirupati, March 19 (IANS) A massive fire in Seshachalam forests that broke out Tuesday was still raging Wednesday, threatening the famous Balaji temple atop the Tirumala Hills, officials said. Officials of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which manages the affairs of the temple, said they were trying to deploy helicopters to control the fire which has already destroyed forests spread over thousands of hectares. TTD officials said they were taking all steps for the safety of devotees. TTD executive officer M.G. Gopal said the fire at Kakula Konda had not yet come under control. |
| Seven dead in shooting at Turkey statistics office | | | By Ozge Ozbilgin ANKARA (Reuters) - A worker at a Turkish statistics office in the eastern province of Kars shot dead six people before committing suicide on Wednesday, in what local media said appeared to have been a revenge attack over a professional dispute. Kars Governor Eyup Tepe said the Statistics Institute (TUIK) employee had come to the building and had shot dead six staff including the regional manager with a Glock pistol. "Veysi Erim was working as a sociologist ... and was receiving treatment for psychological problems. Kars is in northeastern Turkey near the Armenian border, where militants of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) - branded a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the United States and the European Union - have conducted attacks including kidnappings. |

"The President tacitly accepted the implementation of all measures at his residence and has unduly benefitted from the enormous capital investment in the non-security installations at his private residence," Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said in her report. It was likely to damage the image of scandal-plagued Zuma and his ruling African National Congress (ANC) in the forthcoming elections.
