"We received a complaint against the JMM candidate from Giridih that police were taking no action against him in a murder case. Last week, a youth Santosh Pandey was beaten to death in Bermo of Bokaro district. There were nine accused in the murder, including JMM legislator Mahto. |
| China detains more than 1,500 in text spam crackdown | | | Chinese authorities said on Tuesday they have detained 1,530 people in a crackdown on the use of fake telecommunication base stations to send spam text messages to mobile telephones, a persistent problem in the world's largest cellphone market. The Ministry of Public Security said that the campaign, which began in February, had resulted in the seizure of more than 2,600 fake base stations and identification of 3,540 suspected criminal acts. Fake base stations are used by criminals to send spam messages to nearby mobile users using fake telephone numbers or disguised as messages from official sources, like government offices, the ministry said. One of the criminal groups discovered, in the northeastern province of Liaoning, is suspected of sending more than 200 million spam messages. |
| Taliban gunmen storm election office near Afghan presidential candidate's home | | By Hamid Shalizi and Maria Golovnina KABUL (Reuters) - Suicide bombers and gunmen in Afghanistan attacked an election commission office beside the home of presidential candidate Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday, rattling nerves in the Afghan capital less than two weeks before a crucial election. Kabul is on high alert ahead of the April 5 presidential vote that Taliban insurgents have threatened to derail through a campaign of bombings and assassinations. Ghani, a former World Bank official and frontrunner in the vote, was not at home at the time of the attack, for which the Taliban took responsibility. Security is tight in Kabul ahead of the election, which is designed to mark Afghanistan's first democratic transfer of power.

| RTI activist found dead at home near Pune | | | Pune, March 25 (IANS) The body of a prominent Right to Information (RTI) activist, Vilas Baravkar was found hanging in his house in suburban Chakan town near here Tuesday morning, police said. The police have recovered a suicide note from Baravkar's home in Chakan, 33 km from Pune, police officials told media persons. The two-page, hand-written suicide note on a Rs.100 stamp paper has named at least four dozen people, including well-known politicians, police personnel and lower-level government officials as responsible for his suicide. Investigating officer Kishore Patil said all details in the note would be investigated. |
| Egypt puts Muslim Brotherhood leader, 682 others on trial | | By Treza Kamal MINYA, Egypt (Reuters) - The leader of Egypt's outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and 682 others went on trial on Tuesday on charges including murder, their lawyer said, a day after more than 500 supporters of deposed Islamist president Mohamed Mursi were sentenced to death. Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie, 70, and the others were being tried in the same court in Minya Province that condemned 529 members of the Islamist group to death, in what rights groups said was the biggest mass death sentence handed out in Egypt's modern history. The United Nations human rights office said on Tuesday the mass death sentences contravened international law, and voiced concern for others facing the same charges. The army has cracked down hard on the Brotherhood since it toppled Mursi, Egypt's first freely elected president, in July.

The demonstrators led by Suthep Thaugsuban disrupted a general election for the lower house in February, which was annulled by the Constitutional Court on Friday, but they have no problem with Sunday's vote for the upper house. "We will not block Sunday's Senate election, because we need to reform the executive and legislative branches and the Senate is key to our reform plans," Wittaya Kaewparadai, a protest leader, told Reuters.

| Two killed in shooting at U.S. Navy base in Virginia | | | By Eric M. Johnson REUTERS - A civilian shot dead a sailor aboard a ship at a U.S. Navy base in Norfolk, Virginia, late on Monday before being killed by base security forces, naval officials said. Security services briefly shut down Naval Station Norfolk after the incident involving the two men, which occurred on board the USS Mahan destroyer while it was docked at the base's Pier 1, Navy spokeswoman Beth Baker said. The civilian had been carrying a firearm on the base in violation of rules that only allow security personnel to do so, Baker said. The sailor was an active-duty member and Navy officials were looking into the "access and credentials" of the civilian, who did have authorization to be on the installation, Baker said. |
