REUTERS/Jane Rosenberg/FilesBy Joseph Ax NEW YORK (Reuters) - On September 11, 2001, just hours after hijackers deliberately crashed passenger aircraft in attacks on the United States, a Kuwaiti teacher and imam named Suleiman Abu Ghaith met Osama bin Laden inside a cave in Afghanistan. "We are the ones who did it," bin Laden told Abu Ghaith, before asking him the next day to use his powers of oratory to send a videotaped "message to the world," Abu Ghaith testified on Wednesday in a surprise move at his trial on terrorism-related charges. The video, and others like it, form the basis for the U.S. government's case against Abu Ghaith, who would later marry one of bin Laden's daughters. Prosecutors say Abu Ghaith, 48, functioned as a spokesman and recruiter for bin Laden's Islamic militant group al Qaeda and knew of plans to attack the United States in the future.

Senegal failing on pledge to halt abuse in Koranic schools - HRW
8:37:51 PM
By Misha Hussain DAKAR, March 19 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - A year after a fire killed eight children when it ripped through a Koranic school in Senegal, the government has failed to prosecute those responsible and to halt the abuse of young boys in Islamic education, Human Rights Watch said on Wednesday. In the wake of the fire in the Medina district of Dakar, President Macky Sall pledged to impose state regulation on the Koranic school system, which involves 30,000 boys in the Senegalese capital alone. Thousands of boys - many of them entrusted to Koranic teachers by rural families too poor to support them - are forced to beg on the streets of Dakar every day. Many of them live in cramped and squalid conditions and some are subjected to physical and even sexual abuse, rights groups say.

REUTERS/John Gress/FilesBy Aruna Viswanatha and Ben Klayman WASHINGTON/DETROIT (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp will pay a record $1.2 billion to resolve a criminal probe in to safety issues, in a deal that could serve as a template for how U.S. authorities approach a similar investigation into General Motors Co. The settlement between the Justice Department and Toyota includes an admission by the auto manufacturer that it misled American consumers about two different problems that caused cars to accelerate even as drivers tried to slow them down. The agreement comes as General Motors is also under investigation over its handling of an ignition switch failure linked to a dozen deaths. GM recalled more than 1.6 million vehicles more than a decade after first noticing the issue. Top officials said the Toyota settlement could serve as a template for similar cases.
