U.S. Army general reprimanded for adultery, ordered to forfeit pay

By Kelly Twedell FORT BRAGG, North Carolina (Reuters) - A U.S. Army general who had faced possible life in prison on sexual assault charges was reprimanded by a judge on Thursday and ordered to forfeit $20,000 in pay for mistreating a captain during one of several improper relationships with junior female officers. Brigadier General Jeffrey Sinclair avoided jail time or dismissal from the Army for military crimes that were aired in a rare court-martial of a top officer. He admitted to various offenses this week in a plea deal that dropped the sexual assault charges involving the female captain, who said Sinclair forced her to perform oral sex when she tried to break off their illicit liaison. "The system has worked," Sinclair said after court in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.


Manipuri woman found dead in Delhi

New Delhi, March 20 (IANS) A 20-year-old Manipuri woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her rented accommodation here Thursday, police said. Sofia, who came to Delhi over a week ago, was staying at the rented flat of her Manipuri woman friend at Munirka village in south Delhi.

REUTERS/Roger Bosch/Pool/FilesBy David Dolan JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's main opposition party laid criminal charges against President Jacob Zuma on Thursday, accusing him of "flagrant abuse" of public money over $23 million in upgrades to his home that included a swimming pool and a cattle enclosure. The Democratic Alliance (DA) filed eight charges of corruption against Zuma at a police station near his Nkandla homestead, a party spokeswoman said. The sprawling compound in rural KwaZulu-Natal province has become a growing headache for Zuma and his ruling ANC just six weeks before an election. South Africa's corruption watchdog on Wednesday said Zuma benefitted "unduly" from the state-funded security upgrades, accusing him of conduct "inconsistent with his office".




Turkish PM says killing of security personnel was "terrorist attack"

REUTERS/StringerTurkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan described the gunning down of three members of the security forces in the southern province of Nigde on Thursday as a "nefarious terrorist attack" but did not say who was responsible. Paramilitary and regular police officers were manning a checkpoint when the attackers opened fire from a truck, Turkey's Dogan News Agency (DHA) said. "A nefarious terrorist attack has been carried out against our gendarmarie and police in the Ulukisla district of Nigde," Erdogan said. Five other members of the security forces were wounded, local news agencies said.




Man killed, nine injured in Maharashtra train accident

Mumbai, March 20 (IANS) A man was killed and nine others were injured when five coaches of a suburban train derailed near Titwala in Thane district here Thursday, officials said. Five bogies of the Kasara-CST local train derailed between Titwala and Ambivali stations. The dead man was identified as 25-year-old Dhawal M. Lodha, said an official of the Central Railway headquarters at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. The incident - which occurred around 2.50 p.m. - disrupted train services on the Central Railway's suburban section for over two hours.

General Xu Caihou, 70, who retired as vice chairman of the Central Military Commission last year and from the Communist Party's decision-making politburo in 2012, was taken to an undisclosed location on Monday for questioning by anti-corruption investigators, the two sources told Reuters. "Xu Caihou's secretaries, bodyguards and driver have been changed to cut off his links with the outside world," one of the sources said, adding that members of his family had also been detained. The sources, who have direct knowledge of the matter, said Xu was helping with a probe into Lieutenant-General Gu Junshan, 57, who has been under investigation for corruption since he was sacked as deputy director of the logistics department of the People's Liberation Army in 2012.




French national arrested with drugs in Goa

Four killed, 27 injured in Meghalaya storm

Shillong, March 20 (IANS) Four people, including a six-month-old baby, were killed and at least 27 others injured in a cyclonic storm in Meghalaya's West Khasi Hills district, officials said Thursday. Four people died on the spot when their house was destroyed in the cyclone, West Khasi Hills District Magistrate S. Kharlyngdoh told IANS over phone from Nongstoin, 94 km from Shillong. Those killed have been identified as Edmund Nongsieg, 20, Pynibor Nongsieg, 12, Phibanroi Marngar, 25, and her six-month-old baby.
