U.S. Senate leader orders probe of alleged CIA computer hacking
4:36:06 PM
By Patricia Zengerle and Richard Cowan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The leader of the U.S. Senate on Thursday ordered an investigation into what he called an "indefensible" breach of the Senate Intelligence Committee's computers by the CIA. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said accusations that the Central Intelligence Agency spied on the panel's computers as it investigated the use of harsh interrogation techniques raised concerns about possible violations of the Constitution. "The CIA has not only interfered with the lawful congressional oversight of its activities, but has also seemingly attempted to intimidate its overseers by subjecting them to criminal investigation," Reid said in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder obtained by Reuters. Senator Dianne Feinstein, who heads the Senate Intelligence Committee, accused the agency last week of searching computers used by committee staffers examining CIA documents related to the use of harsh interrogation methods such as simulated drowning, or waterboarding, in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

By Ian Simpson ARLINGTON, Virginia (Reuters) - A suspected Osama bin Laden bodyguard held at Guantanamo Bay military prison for 12 years on Thursday faced a U.S. national security board weighing whether he should remain in detention there. Ali Ahmad al-Razihi, 33, is suspected of having been part of what U.S. intelligence officials called the "Dirty 30" security detail around bin Laden, a founder of al Qaeda who was killed in 2011 by U.S. forces in Pakistan. Razihi's hearing before the Periodic Review Board was to re-examine whether he should continue to be held without charge at Guantanamo Bay, the U.S. military prison in Cuba, or be transferred, possibly home to Yemen. One of the two U.S. military representatives for Razihi read a statement to the panel that said Razihi was focused on returning to Yemen, getting married and helping with the family fruit and vegetable business.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai's government has long complained that foreign forces have locked up many Afghans on dubious grounds and with no proper judicial process. A similar release last month caused tension with the United States. The latest batch walked free from Bagram prison, which was transferred to Afghan control last year as a milestone in the withdrawal of U.S. and coalition forces from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

U.S. general reprimanded for adultery, avoids jail in court-martial
4:20:07 PM
By Kelly Twedell FORT BRAGG, North Carolina (Reuters) - A U.S. Army general who had faced possible life in prison on sexual assault charges was reprimanded by a judge on Thursday but avoided any jail time for mistreating a captain during one of several improper relationships with junior female officers. Brigadier General Jeffrey Sinclair was ordered to forfeit $20,000 in pay but he also avoided dismissal from the Army for military crimes that were aired in a rare court-martial of a top officer. The married general admitted to various offenses this week in a plea deal that dropped the sexual assault charges involving the female captain, who said Sinclair forced her to perform oral sex when she tried to break off their adulterous, three-year affair. The one-star general and his defense team said they were grateful for the sentence, which caps a case that began two years ago and derailed the career of the former deputy commander of the 82nd Airborne Division who served five combat tours.

He has pleaded not guilty, saying he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder. Pistorius has been forced to sell his home in the upmarket Silver Woods estate because the legal process is likely to take longer than the three weeks initially indicated by the state, Brian Webber, the lawyer handling the sale, said in a statement.

The sentence for Brigadier General Jeffrey Sinclair did not call for any jail time, reduced rank or dismissal from the Army for his military crimes. The one-star general admitted to various offenses this week in a plea deal that dropped sexual assault charges involving the female captain, who said Sinclair forced her to perform oral sex when she tried to break off their illicit liaison.
