| S.Africa opposition files graft charges against Zuma over home upgrade | |  By David Dolan JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's main opposition party laid criminal charges against President Jacob Zuma on Thursday, accusing him of "flagrant abuse" of public money over $23 million in upgrades to his home that included a swimming pool and a cattle enclosure. The Democratic Alliance (DA) filed eight charges of corruption against Zuma at a police station near his Nkandla homestead, a party spokeswoman said. The sprawling compound in rural KwaZulu-Natal province has become a growing headache for Zuma and his ruling ANC just six weeks before an election. South Africa's corruption watchdog on Wednesday said Zuma benefitted "unduly" from the state-funded security upgrades, accusing him of conduct "inconsistent with his office".

| Man killed, nine injured in Maharashtra train accident | | | Mumbai, March 20 (IANS) A man was killed and nine others were injured when five coaches of a suburban train derailed near Titwala in Thane district here Thursday, officials said. Five bogies of the Kasara-CST local train derailed between Titwala and Ambivali stations. The dead man was identified as 25-year-old Dhawal M. Lodha, said an official of the Central Railway headquarters at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. The incident - which occurred around 2.50 p.m. - disrupted train services on the Central Railway's suburban section for over two hours. |
| Former top China army officer under house arrest in graft probe - sources | |  By Benjamin Kang Lim and Ben Blanchard BEIJING (Reuters) - A top retired Chinese general has been put under virtual house arrest while he assists with an investigation into the military's worst corruption scandal in almost a decade, two sources said, an indication the probe might be expanding. General Xu Caihou, 70, who retired as vice chairman of the Central Military Commission last year and from the Communist Party's decision-making politburo in 2012, was taken to an undisclosed location on Monday for questioning by anti-corruption investigators, the two sources told Reuters. "Xu Caihou's secretaries, bodyguards and driver have been changed to cut off his links with the outside world," one of the sources said, adding that members of his family had also been detained. The sources, who have direct knowledge of the matter, said Xu was helping with a probe into Lieutenant-General Gu Junshan, 57, who has been under investigation for corruption since he was sacked as deputy director of the logistics department of the People's Liberation Army in 2012.

| U.S. Guantanamo board to review case of 'Dirty 30' bin Laden bodyguard | | | By Ian Simpson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A suspected Osama bin Laden bodyguard held at Guantanamo Bay military prison for 12 years is due to face a U.S. national security board on Thursday that will weigh whether he should remain jailed there. Ali Ahmad al-Razihi, a 33-year-old Yemeni, is suspected of once being part of what U.S. intelligence officials called the "Dirty 30" security detail around bin Laden, a founder of al Qaeda who was killed in May 2011 by U.S. forces at his hideout in Pakistan. Razihi's hearing before the Periodic Review Board will re-examine whether he should be held without charge at Guantanamo Bay, the U.S. military prison in Cuba, or be transferred, possibly to Yemen. A U.S. military representative for Razihi said in an online statement to the panel late on Wednesday that Razihi was focused on returning to Yemen, helping with the family business and marrying. |
| Four IAF choppers begin Tirumala fire dousing operation | | | Tirupati, March 20 (IANS) Four helicopters of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and 100 army personnel Thursday joined an operation to douse a fire raging in Seshachalam forests for three days, officials said. Two Mi-17 and two C130 helicopters took off from Renigunta airport near Tirupati in the afternoon to put out the fire, which is reported to be raging about three km from the famous Balaji temple atop Tirumala Hills. Earlier, Sambasiva Rao, director general, fire services, made an aerial survey of the forests. Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which manages the affairs of the famed temple, said the flames at Kakula Konda near Tirumala were controlled to a large extent but the fire was still raging in Papavinasanam. |
