4:39:05 PM
By Jonathan Kaminsky OLYMPIA, Washington (Reuters) - A Native American tribe, concerned about the impact of marijuana on its youth, is fighting to derail the rollout of a nascent recreational pot industry across a quarter of Washington state, where it still holds some traditional rights. The roughly 10,000-member Yakama Nation had already asserted sovereignty to keep pot outlawed on 1.2 million acres of reservation land it controls in central Washington's Yakima Valley. "Marijuana is the biggest problem for our people up to age 40," said George Colby, attorney for the Yakama Nation. "It's a bigger problem than alcohol." The move adds to a growing backlash against pot in Washington state that pits the liberal tech hub of Seattle against some more conservative areas.

However, text messages between the pair in the weeks leading up to the shooting painted a picture of a volatile, stormy relationship, with Steenkamp accusing Pistorius of continual jealousy and outbursts of anger.

Not carved in stone, views of U.S. statues change with the times
2:09:20 PM
Now civic groups are demanding a similar fate for an 1892 bronze statue in New York's Central Park of medical pioneer James Marion Sims, long revered as the father of modern gynecology, but more recently found to have experimented on female slaves. "People once taken to be heroes can, in an another era, look far less heroic," said David Greenberg, associate professor of History and of Journalism and Media Studies at Rutgers University in New Jersey. The New York City Parks Department has deflected demands to remove the statue of Dr. Sims and instead plans to install a plaque adding historical context, said department spokeswoman Tara Kiernan. Democratic lawmakers in Wisconsin, incensed over Republican Governor Scott Walker's 2011 anti-union efforts, failed in their efforts to remove the statehouse portrait of his long-dead predecessor, Governor Jeremiah Rusk, known for the violent suppression of a 1886 labor uprising.

China jails man for seeking repeat of Tiananmen protest - Amnesty
1:24:32 PM

Red flags flutter as paramilitary policemen stand guard on the Tiananmen Square near the Great Hall of the People during the closing ceremony of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), in Beijing, March 12, 2014. REUTERS/Petar KujundzicChina has jailed for 18 months a man who tried to stage a repeat of the 1989 Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protest, rights group Amnesty International said on Monday, in another sign of the ruling Communist Party's intolerance of dissent. Public discussion of the Tiananmen crackdown, in which rights groups say hundreds were probably killed, is still taboo in China. Gu Yimin applied last May for permission to demonstrate on June 4, the 24th anniversary of the bloody crackdown in Beijing's Tiananmen Square, but the government rejected his application and arrested him. A court in Changshu, in the eastern province of Jiangsu, found Gu guilty of inciting state subversion, Amnesty said in an email.
