Herdsmen kill 100 in attacks on Nigerian villages

By Isaac Abrak KADUNA, Nigeria (Reuters) - Gunmen shot, hacked and burned to death at least 100 people and razed homes in central Nigeria, a region riven by disputes over land, religion and ethnicity, local officials and witnesses said on Sunday. Police confirmed the raids by Fulani herdsman at around 11 p.m. on Friday on three villages in Kaduna state, but declined to give a death toll. Hundreds have been killed in the past year in clashes pitting the cattle-herding and largely Muslim Fulani people against mostly Christian settled communities like the Berom in Nigeria's volatile "Middle Belt", where its mostly Christian south and Muslim north meet. The unrest in central Nigeria is not usually linked to the insurgency in the northeast by Boko Haram, an al Qaeda-linked group which wants to impose Islamic law in northern Nigeria.


Delhi drunk couple hit five, two dead

New Delhi, March 16 (IANS) Two people were killed and three others injured when a high speed sedan in which a couple in an inebriated state was travelling hit them here, police said Sunday. The accident occurred early Sunday morning when a speeding Chevrolet Cruze hit an auto rickshaw and people standing by the roadside in Samaipur Badli area of west Delhi. Auto driver Surendra, 40, and Satish, 20, who had come to Delhi from Rajasthan to appear in a CRPF recruitment exam were declared dead when they were rushed to a hospital.


Malaysian PM calls Manmohan, India halts search for now

New Delhi, March 16 (IANS) Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak Sunday called his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh and requested technical assistance in tracking the possible route taken by the missing Malaysian plane. India has temporarily suspended its operations as Kuala Lumpur reassesses its search strategy. "The Malaysian prime minister requested for technical assistance from Indian authorities in corroborating possible paths that the missing Malaysian airliner might have taken after losing contact with ATC (air traffic controller) radars," an official from the Prime Minister's Office told IANS.

New Delhi, March 16 (IANS) Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak Sunday called his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh and requested technical assistance in tracking the possible route taken by the missing Malaysian plane. "The Malaysian prime minister requested for technical assistance from Indian authorities in corroborating possible paths that the missing Malaysian airliner might have taken after losing contact with ATC (air traffic controller) radars," an official from the Prime Minister's Office told IANS. "PM (Manmohan Singh), while sharing his concern and anxiety about the fate of the aircraft and the the well being of the passengers, assured all possible assistance from concerned Indian authorities," the official said.

The incident took place just before midnight on Saturday after locals in Larkana district alleged that Sangeet Kumar, 42, had torn out pages of Islam's holy book and tossed them down on the street from the roof of his home. All the statues have been destroyed by the attackers," Kalpana Devi, chairperson of the local Hindu committee, told Reuters. They also set fire to the temple before ransacking it." Sindh province, where the attack took place, is home to most of Pakistan's small Hindu community which numbers about two million among a population of about 180 million.




India suspends search for Malaysian plane, but on standby

New Delhi, March 16 (IANS) India Sunday suspended its search operation for the missing Malaysian plane but placed its assets on standby as Kuala Lumpur reassessed the strategy for the hunt. "Malaysian authorities have now indicated that, based on investigation, the search operations have entered a new phase and a strategy for further searches is being formulated," said a statement from the defence ministry. "Accordingly, search operations have been suspended and all Indian assets earmarked for SAR (search and rescue) operations have been placed on standby," it said. India has deployed numerous assets of its navy, air force and coast guard to search for the missing plane of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370.


Wanted criminal held with two aides in Gurgaon

Gurgaon, March 16 (IANS) The Gurgaon police arrested a criminal, wanted for shootouts at Rewari and Mahendergarh courts, along with his two accomplices, police said Sunday. Vivek Sharma, joint commissioner of Gurgaon police said Palam Vihar crime branch team arrested Kuldeep alias Doctor, 28, along with his aides, Kamal and Charan Singh (both in their early twenties) Saturday night. They were nabbed from the Tau Devi Lal park here in sector 22 while they were planning the murder of a man in village Badhrana (Rewari) on Holi (March 17). Kuldeep of Khayra village in Mahendergarh district of south Haryana was an MBBS aspirant from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak.
