| Egyptian court sentences 529 Brotherhood members to death | |  By Asma Alsharif CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian court sentenced 529 members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood to death for murder and other offenses on Monday in a sharp escalation of a crackdown on the movement that is likely to fuel instability. Family members stood outside the courthouse screaming after the verdict, which defense lawyers called the biggest mass death sentence handed out in Egypt's modern history. Turmoil has deepened since the army overthrew Egypt's first freely elected president, Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood, in July. Security forces have killed hundreds of Brotherhood members in the streets and arrested thousands.

He has pleaded not guilty to murder, saying he was deeply in love with Steenkamp, who he had been dating for a few months, and that he mistook her for an intruder hiding in a toilet at his luxury Pretoria home. However, text messages between the pair in the weeks leading up to the shooting painted a picture of a volatile, stormy relationship, with Steenkamp accusing Pistorius of continual jealousy and outbursts of anger.

Chandrika Sharma, who headed the International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF) in Chennai, boarded the flight to Beijing with 238 other people March 8 on way to Mongolia to participate in a conference. Chandrika Sharma was one of the five Indian passengers on that flight. |
| Telugu actor, Nigerian arrested for drug trafficking | | | Hyderabad, March 24 (IANS) Hyderabad police Monday arrested Telugu film actor Nanduri Uday Kiran and a Nigerian national for drug trafficking. They were apprehended at Jubliee Hills checkpost and seized 15 grams of cocaine, a police official said. The arrests were made when Uday Kiran was transacting a drug deal with R. O. Kehinde, a Nigerian, who had come to India on business visa and staying in the city. According to police, 29-year-old Nanduri Uday Kiran, who acted in films like "Parare", "Rakshakulu", "Yuvarajyam" and "Facebook", was receiving the drugs from the other accused whenever required. |

The official process for the Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal began last week with the panel issuing the notification for four seats -- Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar -- in the northern part of the state where polling would be held April 17. |
| Himachal woman accident victim's compensation raised four times | | | Shimla, March 24 (IANS) The housewife is the backbone of a home and her disability makes her a burden on others, observed the Himachal Pradesh High Court while enhancing the compensation of a woman litigant, permanently disabled in a road accident. "She has become permanently disabled, helpless, hapless and a burden on others," observed acting Chief Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir while increasing the figure four times, from Rs.300,000, ordered by the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, to Rs.12.54 lakh. The claimant, who suffered permanent disability to the extent of 45 percent due to backbone and spinal joint dislocations, met with an accident July 30, 2001. The Oriental Insurance Company Ltd would pay the enhanced compensation. |
