Man fails to get BJP ticket, attempts suicide

New Delhi, March 22 (IANS) A 32-year-old man, claiming to be a BJP leader, tried to commit suicide outside the party's Delhi office Saturday by consuming poison after he failed to get a ticket for the Lok Sabha polls, police said. C.R. Gaura, a resident of Karnataka, consumed a poisonous substance outside the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party office situated at Pant Marg. "Gaura was rushed to a hospital where his condition is stated to be out of danger," a police officer said. During investigation, it came to light that Gaura was demanding a ticket to contest the Lok Sabha election from Karnataka but the party refused, police said.


B.Ed student hangs herself in Agra

Agra, March 22 (IANS) A woman B.Ed student at a deemed university here Saturday committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan, police said. Kavita Sharma, a student of Dayalbagh deemed university who lived in a rented room with her brother in Balkeshwar Kunj area, returned from her village after the Holi festival early Saturday. She was supposed to attend an interview in the Khandari campus of Agra University. On not getting any response, the friend phoned her landlord whose daughter went to Kavita's room only to see her hanging from the fan.


Mamata seeks to defend pendency of rape trials

Kolkata, March 22 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday sought to defend the administration's inability to ensure speedy trial of pending rape cases, saying it was not in her purview when a court will give a verdict. "What can we do if the family members move to a higher court or roam around going to different courts or to the President? When a court will give judgment, it's not in my purview," said Banerjee referring to the family members of a rape and murder victim in Kamduni in North 24 Parganas district, who met President Pranab Mukherjee seeking death penalty for the culprits.


Weapons, bombs, gold seized in Bengal

Kolkata, March 22 (IANS) A total of 392 illegal weapons, 686 rounds of ammunition and 1,882 bombs have been seized by police in West Bengal, while three kg gold was confiscated from the airport here, an Election Commission official said here Saturday. On Saturday, three kg gold was seized from the airport, worth Rs.91.5 lakh," said Gupta.


Gurgaon toll plaza staff booked for thrashing bus driver

Gurgaon, March 22 (IANS) Employees of the toll plaza on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway were Saturday booked after a bus driver was beaten up and the vehicle damaged, police said. Alleged musclemen of the contractor company Saturday thrashed the driver of a bus ferrying Maruti Suzuki employees to the Industrial Model Township (IMT) Manesar plant at Kherkidaula toll plaza. "About 50 of our buses are attached with Maruti Suzuki, Honda and Denso companies for ferrying their staff. The bus was taking Maruti employees when two bouncers demanded Rs.100 from driver Rajiv Yadav, 25, at Kherkidaula toll barrier.


Seven killed in Maharashtra oil tanker blast

Thane (Maharashtra), March 22 (IANS) At least seven people were killed and eight injured when a petro-chemical tanker overturned and exploded on the busy Ahmedabad-Mumbai national highway here Saturday, officials said. The tanker, carrying an unknown petro-chemical, reportedly skidded, turned turtle, exploded and caught fire on the highway near Charoti around 2.30 p.m. Police officer Preeti Patil of Kasa police station said the burning tanker hurtled down the highway knocking down around 10 other vehicles in its path.


13 held in Assam witch-hunting case

Guwahati, March 22 (IANS) At least 13 people were arrested Saturday for their alleged involvement in the murder of three members of a family in Assam on suspicion of practicing witchcraft, police said. The victims were identified as Rajendra Brahma (65), his wife Bangali Brahma (60) and their 35-year-old daughter Malati Brahma, police said. Police said the incident took place at Borjhora village in Kokrajhar district under the Bodoland Territorial Areas Districts (BTAD). "Some villagers suspected the family of practicing witchcraft and killed them on the night of March 19," said Inspector General of Police (BTAD) L.R. Bishnoi.


BSP MP granted bail in maid torture case

New Delhi, March 22 (IANS) A court here Saturday granted two months interim bail to Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) parliamentarian Dhananjay Singh, accused for torturing his maid. Additional Sessions Judge Lokesh Kumar Sharma granted two month interim bail to Singh on a personal bond of Rs.1 lakh and two sureties of the like amount. Delhi Police had opposed the bail plea.


Woman stabbed to death in Maharashtra train

Mumbai, March 22 (IANS) A woman commuter was stabbed to death inside the luggage coach of a moving train in Maharashtra early Saturday, officials said. The woman, identified as Panga J. Andheri, aged around 55, boarded the Virar-Churchgate suburban train around 4 a.m. with a bundle of vegetables. According to Government Railway Police officials in Vasai, as the train picked up speed, an unidentified person jumped into the compartment and repeatedly stabbed the woman with a knife.
