At least 150,000 people have been killed in Syria's three-year-old civil war, a third of them civilians, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Tuesday. The UK-based Observatory, which monitors violence in Syria through a network of activists and medical or security sources, said that real toll was likely to be significantly higher at around 220,000 deaths. Efforts to end the conflict by bringing together representatives of President Bashar al-Assad's government and the opposition have so far failed. The United Nations peace mediator for Syria said last week that talks were unlikely to resume soon.

Humanitarian crisis looms in western Myanmar as foreign aid workers leave
12:22:40 PM
With food stocks dwindling and prices rising by the hour in his camp for displaced Rohingya in Myanmar's Rakhine state, Hla Maung decided to ask a friend in the neighbouring village for food. The situation is about to get dramatically worse for Hla Maung and tens of thousands of others dependent on food and water rations, said humanitarian workers evacuated after recent riots in the state capital, Sittwe. At least 20,000 people in displacement camps around Sittwe will run out of drinking water within 10 days, while food stocks will run out within two weeks, imperilling thousands more. The overall numbers of people facing shortages are likely much higher, because the aid workers were referring only to communities in the Sittwe area.

Anti-government protesters carry a comrade who was shot as their bus came under fire in BangkokBy Amy Sawitta Lefevre BANGKOK (Reuters) - Gunmen opened fire on a group of Thai anti-government protesters driving away from a Bangkok rally on Tuesday, killing one, wounding four and raising tension in a political crisis that has gripped the country for months. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the violence which brought the death toll to 24, with scores wounded, since protesters took to the streets in November in a bid to force Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra from office and erase the influence of her brother, ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra. Yingluck has resisted mounting pressure to step down and her "red shirt" supporters have called for a mass rally in Bangkok on Sunday, raising the risk of further confrontation. One succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head," an official at Ramathibodi Hospital in Bangkok told Reuters.

Ukraine orders disarming of armed groups after shooting
10:15:25 AM
By Richard Balmforth KIEV (Reuters) - Ukraine's parliament on Tuesday ordered security forces to disarm illegal armed groups as police shut down the Kiev base of a far-right nationalist group prominent in the overthrow of Viktor Yanukovich after a shooting incident in which three people were wounded. Ukraine's new leaders acted after Monday night's violence in Kiev city centre, conscious that an increasing criminal climate could discredit the anti-Yanukovich uprising and be used by Moscow's propaganda machine to show that law and order was breaking down in Ukraine. The proposal approved by parliament linked a growing "criminal atmosphere" to what it described as "systematic provocations from foreign citizens in the eastern-southern regions of Ukraine and in Kiev" - suggesting that Russian agents or trouble-makers were stirring unrest in parts of the country. "Parliament orders the interior ministry and the state security service to immediately disarm illegal armed groups," the motion said.
