Eurosceptic election surge gives EU a headache
6:28:20 PM

Marine Le Pen, France's National Front political party head, reacts to results after the polls closed in the European Parliament elections at the party's headquarters in NanterreBy Paul Taylor and Robin Emmott BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Stunning victories in European Parliament elections by nationalist, Eurosceptic parties from France and Britain left the European Union licking its wounds on Monday and facing a giant policy dilemma. While the centre-right and centre-left will continue to control more than half of the 751 seats in the EU legislature, they will face an unprecedented challenge from noisy insurgents determined to stop business as usual in the 28-nation bloc. French Prime Minister Manuel Valls called the breakthrough by Marine Le Pen's anti-immigration, anti-euro National Front, which topped a national vote for the first time and pushed his Socialists into third place, a political "earthquake". Across the Channel, another tremor raised new doubts about Britain's long-term future in the EU.

For Egyptian secular activist, election is reminder of elusive dream
6:22:09 PM
By Maggie Fick CAIRO (Reuters) - In 2010, the death of an activist at the hands of the Egyptian police galvanised computer engineer Wael Eskandar to become a political activist. Eventually, he joined protests that would help topple veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak. As Egyptians vote in an election expected to install former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as president, Eskandar seems deflated by what he calls the "triumph of the counter-revolution". Sisi toppled Egypt's first freely elected president, Mohamed Mursi, last July and mounted a tough crackdown on his Muslim Brotherhood that has been condemned by human rights groups.

Three years after the historic uprising against Hosni Mubarak, the vote is set to restore a pattern of rule by men from the military after Sisi toppled Egypt's first freely elected leader, Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood. Sisi faces only one challenger in the two-day vote: the leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi. "We see Sisi as a real man.

Thai coup leader threatens crackdown if protests resume

Thai Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha addresses reporters at the Royal Thai Army Headquarters in BangkokBy Panarat Thepgumpanat and Paul Mooney BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai coup leader General Prayuth Chan-ocha said on Monday he had been formally endorsed by the king as head of a military council that will run the country, and warned he would use force if political protests flare up again. Among them, Italian-Thai Development Pcl, the country's largest construction firm, rose 0.5 percent even though the army has summoned its president, Premchai Karnasuta, to appear on Monday, along with 37 others including political associates and big business allies of Thaksin.

As Egypt votes, some still caught in political crossfire

Egyptians wait in line as policeman stands guard before opening of polling station during Egyptian presidential election in CairoBy Shadia Nasralla SUEZ Egypt (Reuters) - Samir El-Gamal, a 10-year-old Egyptian boy, died in his mother's arms last year, struck in the back of the head by a stray bullet while they were walking near clashes between supporters and opponents of deposed Islamist President Mohamed Mursi. As Egypt votes this week on a successor to Mursi, Samir's loved ones now want authorities to declare the boy a "martyr", a term used to portray as heroes members of the security forces killed in fighting with Islamists. They do not want Samir to have died in vain, just another bystander killed in the political struggle which erupted after then army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi removed the Muslim Brotherhood's Mursi from power last July. He is seen as a strong figure who can end the political and economic instability that has dogged Egypt since a popular uprising ousted President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

UK's Cameron rebuffs calls for early EU referendum after election loss
10:51:17 AM

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron and London Mayor Boris Johnson arrive for a rally in west LondonBy Andrew Osborn LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron rejected calls on Monday to bring forward an in/out European Union membership referendum after his party was beaten into third place in European elections by the anti-EU UKIP party. Cameron's assertion that he will leave his European policy unchanged despite UKIP's success will be seen as an attempt to avoid a damaging debate on an emotive issue which obsesses his party and helped topple the country's last two Conservative prime ministers. Anxious to win a majority in next year's national election, Conservative strategists want to focus on the fact that they lead a coalition government which has nursed Britain's economy back to health, a job they say is only half-done. Cameron has promised to try to reshape Britain's relationship with the EU if re-elected next year before offering an in/out EU membership referendum by the end of 2017.
