Three years after the historic uprising against Hosni Mubarak, the vote is set to restore a pattern of rule by men from the military after Sisi toppled Egypt's first freely elected leader, Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood.  By Shadia Nasralla SUEZ Egypt (Reuters) - Samir El-Gamal, a 10-year-old Egyptian boy, died in his mother's arms last year, struck in the back of the head by a stray bullet while they were walking near clashes between supporters and opponents of deposed Islamist President Mohamed Mursi. As Egypt votes this week on a successor to Mursi, Samir's loved ones now want authorities to declare the boy a "martyr", a term used to portray as heroes members of the security forces killed in fighting with Islamists. They do not want Samir to have died in vain, just another bystander killed in the political struggle which erupted after then army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi removed the Muslim Brotherhood's Mursi from power last July. He is seen as a strong figure who can end the political and economic instability that has dogged Egypt since a popular uprising ousted President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

| UK's Cameron rebuffs calls for early EU referendum after election loss |

 By Andrew Osborn LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron rejected calls on Monday to bring forward an in/out European Union membership referendum after his party was beaten into third place in European elections by the anti-EU UKIP party. Cameron's assertion that he will leave his European policy unchanged despite UKIP's success will be seen as an attempt to avoid a damaging debate on an emotive issue which obsesses his party and helped topple the country's last two Conservative prime ministers. Anxious to win a majority in next year's national election, Conservative strategists want to focus on the fact that they lead a coalition government which has nursed Britain's economy back to health, a job they say is only half-done. Cameron has promised to try to reshape Britain's relationship with the EU if re-elected next year before offering an in/out EU membership referendum by the end of 2017.

 South African Olympic and Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius checked in as a day patient to Pretoria's Weskoppies psychiatric hospital on Monday for the first day of a month of mental tests ordered by the judge overseeing his murder trial. The 27-year-old track star, who faces life in prison if convicted of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine's Day last year, sped past a scrum of waiting television cameras in a car with tinted windows. A heavy police contingent kept reporters from entering the grounds of the hospital, one of South Africa's foremost mental institutions. Pistorius has denied murdering Steenkamp, saying he shot four times at a toilet door in his luxury Pretoria home to protect himself from what he thought was an intruder lurking behind it.
