C. African Republic premier calls for voluntary disarmament next week | Monday, June 02, 2014 3:19 AM
| Central African Republic's prime minister on Sunday called for voluntary national disarmament next week in a bid to halt a worsening cycle of violence that threatens to drive Muslims from the West of the country. In a televised address, Prime Minister Andre Nzapayeke declared June 8 would be a day for all citizens to hand in their weapons, after a spike in sectarian tensions in the majority-Christian capital Bangui following an attack on a church by Muslim gunmen on Wednesday. The attack, in which U.N. officials say at least 17 people were killed, sparked two days of violent protests in Bangui. Thousands of people took to the streets to demand the departure of African Union peacekeepers and the resignation of Interim President Catherine Samba-Panza.

Sonic, Chili's ask customers to keep guns out of restaurants | Monday, June 02, 2014 3:04 AM
| Two national chain restaurants have asked that customers refrain from bringing firearms into their establishments, saying the weapons can create an uncomfortable atmosphere for other diners. Sonic Drive-In and Chili's Grill & Bar both issued statements Friday requesting that customers keep their guns out of their restaurants even if they have an open carry permit. The request, which stops short of an outright ban, came after members of the gun-rights group Open Carry Texas walked into Texas-area outlets of Sonic and Chili's carrying assault rifles. Dallas-based Brinker International Inc, which owns the Chili's chain, said in a statement it was dedicated to providing "a safe environment for our guests and team members." "We recognize that the open carry of firearms creates an uncomfortable atmosphere and is not permitted under many local liquor laws," spokeswoman Ashley Johnson said. |
Opposition parties make inroads in Turkish local election rerun | Monday, June 02, 2014 2:58 AM
| Opposition parties in Turkey were expected to win most of the 13 municipal election reruns held on Sunday after irregularities had forced authorities to cancel some of the March 30 results, slightly denting the ruling party's victory in the contentious poll. According to preliminary results, opposition parties had won or were ahead in nine races, many of them in small communities, and Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's AK Party appeared to have won four of the races that the High Election Board (YSK) ordered be held again. The AK Party dominates the Turkish political landscape, controlling most municipalities and a large majority of the seats in parliament. Erdogan has said his party's success in the March poll had renewed his mandate after 11 years in power when AK Party candidates netted 45 percent of the overall vote, despite a year of anti-government protests and a corruption scandal that implicated the three-time premier's inner circle. |

Republicans question U.S. prisoner swap with Taliban | Monday, June 02, 2014 2:52 AM
| By Warren Strobel WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. politicians questioned whether the deal that freed Bowe Bergdahl in exchange for five Taliban militants amounted to a negotiation with terrorists as the U.S. soldier was flown out of Afghanistan to a military hospital in Germany on Sunday. Army Sergeant Bergdahl, held for nearly five years in Afghanistan, was freed in a deal with the Taliban brokered by the Qatari government. Five Taliban militants, described by Senator John McCain as the "hardest of the hard core," were released from the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and flown to Qatar.

The group has set off several bombs across north and central Nigeria over the past two months, repeatedly causing carnage. |
