| Gunmen kill Red Cross official in Libya, fire grenade at PM's office | | By Ahmed Elumami and Ayman al-Warfalli TRIPOLI/BENGHAZI Libya (Reuters) - Separate groups of gunmen in Libya shot dead a Swiss national working for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), fired a grenade at the prime minister's office and tried to kill a renegade general on Wednesday, officials said. Anarchy is growing the North African oil producer, which has been plagued by turmoil and political infighting since the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. In the east, outside Benghazi, Khalifa Haftar, survived an assassination attempt. And, in the capital Tripoli, gunmen fired a rocket propelled grenade at the office of Prime Minister Ahmed Maiteeq.

| Pakistan's biggest city shuts down as protests over politician's UK arrest spread | | By Syed Raza Hassan KARACHI Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistan's biggest city was in lockdown for a second day on Wednesday, with shops and markets closed and people staying home for fear of violence following the arrest in London of one of the country's most feared men. Altaf Hussain, leader of the powerful Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) party and wanted in Pakistan in relation to a murder case, was arrested in northwest London where he has lived in self-imposed exile since the early 1990s. Karachi, a sprawling and violent port city of 18 million, is virtually controlled by Hussain's party, and reports of sporadic violence emerged as soon as news of his arrest reached the city. "The people of Karachi and other big and small cities of Sindh (province) still see Altaf Hussain as their leader," Nasir Jamal, a senior MQM official, told Reuters.

| Dalai Lama, on Tiananmen anniversary, urges China to embrace democracy | | Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama marked the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown in Beijing on Wednesday by urging China to embrace democracy and offering prayers for the protest "martyrs". The Dalai Lama, reviled by Beijing as a separatist, made the rare comments on the June 4, 1989, violence at a prayer meeting two years after he renounced politics. "I offer my prayers for those who died for freedom, democracy and human rights," the Nobel Peace Prize winner said according to a statement posted on his web site (dalailama.com). "While great progress has been made to integrate into the world economy, I believe it is equally important to encourage China to enter the mainstream of global democracy," he added.

| South Korea ruling party in close races after ferry disaster | | By Jack Kim SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korean President Park Geun-hye's conservative party fought close races on Wednesday in regional and mayoral elections seen as a referendum on the government's handling of a ferry disaster that killed more than 300 people in April. Exit polls released right after the close of polls at 6 p.m. (0900 GMT) showed candidates for the ruling conservative party were headed for victory in five of the 17 key mayoral and provincial races. Opposition candidates were likely to win in five. "I voted this time with a focus on safety, rather than the economy," 26-year-old Ahn Jin-young said after casting her vote in the capital, Seoul.
