| By Tom Perry and Laila Bassam BEIRUT (Reuters) - Beating back an incursion by Islamists from Syria, Lebanon's poorly armed military has paid a high price - 36 of its soldiers have been killed or captured. At odds about so much, including just who their enemies are, leaders from across Lebanon's sectarian divide have shown rare unity by agreeing they have a common foe in the Islamic State - the radical Islamist group that is dismembering Iraq and Syria. With the Lebanese army part of a regional battle against the Sunni radicals, statements of support have come from an unlikely array of countries including Syria and Saudi Arabia, the United States and Iran. As Syria and Iraq have fragmented with the stunning advance of Islamic State fighters - an offshoot of al-Qaeda - protecting Lebanon from renewed instability is a concern shared by all. |

 By Daren Butler and Seda Sezer ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turks began voting on Sunday with Tayyip Erdogan poised to become the country's first elected president, fulfilling his dream of what he calls a "new Turkey" and his opponents say will be an increasingly authoritarian nation. A victory for Erdogan would seal his place in history after more than a decade as prime minister in which Turkey has emerged as a regional economic power, riding a wave of religiously conservative support to transform the secular republic founded by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923.

 By Joseph Menn LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Alarmed by mounting cyber threats around the world and across industries, a growing number of security experts see aggressive government action as the best hope for averting disaster. Such fears and proposals on new laws and executive action to counter these threats were core topics this week in Las Vegas at Black Hat and Def Con, two of the world's largest gatherings for security professionals and hackers. At Black Hat, the keynote speech by respected researcher Dan Geer went straight for national and global policy issues. "Either software houses deliver quality and back it up with product liability, or they will have to let their users protect themselves," said Geer, who works for In-Q-Tel, a venture capital firm serving U.S. intelligence agencies.

Indian tycoon Subrata Roy is putting up the two trophy properties and another luxury New York hotel for sale to raise $1.6 billion for the bail bond that will get him out of Tihar, a sprawling New Delhi prison complex that houses about 12,000 inmates. ...
