Trip Tips: Tour the dark side of Copenhagen's fairy tale
11:55:18 PM

Peolple walk past a windmill in Kastellet park in CopenhagenBy Annabella Nielsen COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - The Danish capital that fostered Hans Christian Andersen, the godfather of fairy tales, and hosts one of Europe's oldest royal lineages is also the setting for grisly murders and political intrigue in television dramas popular across the world. Copenhagen has always been far more complex than Denmark's "happy nation" reputation. This contrast makes for an ideal city break, which should start with a one-hour boat tour that introduces Copenhagen's best sights. These include Venice-like canals, royal palaces and the stark modern architecture Denmark is known for.

Chickenfoot singer Hagar performs during the 43rd Montreux Jazz FestivalA federal appeals court revived a defamation lawsuit on Thursday against rocker Sammy Hagar, former lead singer for Van Halen, by a one-time Playboy bunny who claimed he fathered her son. Circuit Court of Appeals said a lower court judge erred in dismissing claims by the woman after Hagar, 66, accused her in his 2011 autobiography "Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock" of extortion by naming him as the father. Identified as "Jane Doe" in court papers, the woman claimed she had an intermittent five-year affair with Hagar in the 1980s, and became pregnant with his son after a June 1988 Van Halen concert in Detroit.

Reading the oath of office in a ceremony in parliament, Erdogan vowed to protect Turkey's independence and integrity, to abide by the constitution and by the principles of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of the modern secular republic. Erdogan, who had been prime minister since 2003, has consistently presented his time in office as a historic mission to transform Turkey domestically and as a regional power. "We're now more worried than ever about one-man, autocratic rule in Turkey," CHP deputy Aykan Erdemir told Reuters.

Pakistan has been gripped by mass rallies for more than two weeks, with protesters led by cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan and firebrand cleric Tahir ul-Qadri camped outside parliament demanding Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif resign. Attempts to resolve the crisis through talks have failed, creating a deadlock and raising the spectre of violence as thousands of increasingly impatient activists, some armed with sticks, massed in the heart of Islamabad despite intense heat. Addressing the roaring crowd late at night, Qadri said the army had offered to mediate in the stand-off, a proposal he immediately endorsed.
