| Less than half of Hong Kong backs govt electoral reforms - survey | |  By Nicole Li and Clare Baldwin HONG KONG (Reuters) - Less than half of Hong Kong supports the government's electoral reform proposal which would see a pro-Beijing nominating committee select candidates for the city's next leader in 2017, even after major pro-democracy protests demanding open nominations crippled parts of the city last summer. Only 47 percent of the 1,167 people surveyed were in favour of the proposal, which outlines a two-step process for the city's 1,200-strong nominating committee to select two or three candidates for chief executive ahead of a public vote. It is the first public opinion survey since Hong Kong officials published their electoral blueprint last week, and comes ahead of a vote on the controversial proposal by lawmakers in early summer. The Hong Kong government has forged ahead with a plan first outlined by China's parliament last summer.

The Houthis took the capital Sanaa in September, demanding a more inclusive government, and swept south, rattling top world oil exporter Saudi Arabia and its allies, who fear what they see as expanding Iranian influence in the region. Fighting was still raging in the Khor Maksar district of Aden, seen as the main bulwark against the Houthis, early on Wednesday. Baltimore erupted in violence on Monday hours after the funeral for a black man who died April 19 after he was injured in police custody a week earlier. Just ahead of the curfew, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake went to the intersection where protesters had gathered and pleaded with them to go home. I want to thank you for understanding that we want to bring peace," Rawlings-Blake said through a megaphone.

| China says will hunt down serial bribers | | | Chinese authorities will hunt down individuals and organisations which engage in serial bribery, especially in cases which cause serious public anger or accidents, state media said on Wednesday, as the government takes on deep-rooted graft. The country's top prosecutor, as part of broader efforts to fight corruption, will focus on "enormous, long-term and serial" bribery as part of a new campaign it is leading, the official Xinhua news agency said. "(We must) seriously punish bribery which occurs in the selection of officials, and seriously punish bribery which severely harms the people's interests and leads to mass incidents or serious accidents," Xinhua said, citing a meeting held by the prosecutor. "(We must) increase expropriations for illegal income from bribery, raise the cost of the crime of bribery, and bring shock and awe," the report added. |
