Egypt's trial of Mursi "badly flawed" -Human Rights Watch
10:56:08 AM

Ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi looks on from behind bars, along with other Muslim Brotherhood members at a court in the outskirts of CairoThe trial of former Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi, deposed by the army and sentenced to 20 years in jail, was "badly flawed" and appears to have been politically motivated, Human Rights Watch said on Sunday. A court on April 21 convicted Mursi and 12 other Muslim Brotherhood members of violence, kidnapping and torture over the deaths of protesters in 2012. The rise to power of the Brotherhood, a decades-old Islamist movement, after the Arab Spring uprisings polarised Egypt's population and led to months of unrest. The army ousted Mursi in mid-2013 after mass protests against his rule.

Malaysia foils attacks in capital by suspected militants
10:54:38 AM
Malaysian police have arrested 12 people linked to the militant group Islamic State and seized explosives, foiling a plan to attack several locations in and around the capital city. The male suspects, aged 17 to 41, were arrested on Saturday and Sunday from Ulu Langat and Cheras, suburbs near Kuala Lumpur, police chief Khalid Abu Baker said in a statement on Sunday. The plans were in response to calls by Islamic State (IS) to launch terrorist attacks on secular Islamic countries seen as "enemies of IS". Security was heightened in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday as leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) started arriving in Kuala Lumpur for the ASEAN summit, which opens officially on Monday.

Burundi's President Nkurunziza addresses delegates of the ruling CNDD-FDD party during their congress in the capital BujumburaBy Patrick Nduwimana BUJUMBURA (Reuters) - Police in the Burundian capital used water cannon and tear gas on Sunday to disperse protesters demonstrating against President Pierre Nkurunziza seeking a third term, witnesses said, after the government banned protests for or against the move. The ruling CNDD-FDD party nominated Nkuruziza as their presidential candidate at a meeting on Saturday, prompting hundreds of civil society groups to decry the move as a "coup" against the constitution, which limits leaders to two terms in office. "We deplore the way police acted with violence against a peaceful demonstration," Janvier Bigirimana, a civil society activist, told Reuters in the capital Bujumbura. Interior Minister Edouard Nduwimana said the demonstrations were illegal as the government had banned any protest for or against President Nkurunziza running for a third term.
