 By Patrick Nduwimana BUJUMBURA (Reuters) - Burundian riot police on Sunday forcibly dispersed crowds protesting against the president seeking a third term, a decision critics said is unconstitutional and could rekindle turmoil after a decade of calm in the East African state. Witnesses said police used water cannon and tear gas and in some cases live bullets to scatter demonstrators in four districts of Bujumbura after President Pierre Nkurunziza's government banned protests for or against his move. At least one police officer and a protester were injured in the disturbances. Burundi's ruling CNDD-FDD party nominated Nkurunziza as its presidential candidate on Saturday, prompting hundreds of civil society groups to condemn the move as a "coup" against the constitution, which limits leaders to two terms in office.

 The trial of former Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi, deposed by the army and sentenced to 20 years in jail, was "badly flawed" and appears to have been politically motivated, Human Rights Watch said on Sunday. A court on April 21 convicted Mursi and 12 other Muslim Brotherhood members of violence, kidnapping and torture over the deaths of protesters in 2012. The rise to power of the Brotherhood, a decades-old Islamist movement, after the Arab Spring uprisings polarised Egypt's population and led to months of unrest. The army ousted Mursi in mid-2013 after mass protests against his rule.

| Malaysian police have arrested 12 people linked to the militant group Islamic State and seized explosives, foiling a plan to attack several locations in and around the capital city. The male suspects, aged 17 to 41, were arrested on Saturday and Sunday from Ulu Langat and Cheras, suburbs near Kuala Lumpur, police chief Khalid Abu Baker said in a statement on Sunday. The plans were in response to calls by Islamic State (IS) to launch terrorist attacks on secular Islamic countries seen as "enemies of IS". Security was heightened in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday as leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) started arriving in Kuala Lumpur for the ASEAN summit, which opens officially on Monday. |
